NEWVILLE — The conditions were far less than perfect for Saturday’s District 3 cross country championships, held at Big Spring H.S., and the course was wet and muddy.

But four runners from Franklin County — including three from Greencastle-Antrim — ran well enough to advance to next week’s PIAA State Championships.

In Class 2A girls, G-A’s Taryn Parks could not stay with her rival from Northern York, Marlee Starliper, who won the race in 17:19.7. Parks was the runner-up in 18:02.8 and her Blue Devil teammate, Isabella Weaver, placed third in 19:45.2.

In Class 2A boys, the Blue Devils’ Weber Long placed fourth with a clocking of 17:09.2, and in Class 3A boys, Trent Overcash of Chambersburg qualified for states by virtue of his 17th-place effort of 17:08.8.

The Trojans finished ninth in the team standings and the Greencastle girls were eighth.

Chambersburg’s girls placed 10th as a team, and the top runners were Keira Whitehead (42nd, 20:45.4), Anna DeGrange (57th, 21:08.4), Maddie Kinton (58th, 21:08.6), Olivia Rieck (21:14.9) and Amelya Mauriello (21:37.6).

Trojan girls coach Chris Monheim said, “I was pleased with the 10th-place finish, because we had our best day of the season. I’m anxious to see what this group can do in the future, because the entire top seven girls should return for next year.”

For the Trojan boys, Branden Boyd was 55th (17:55.3), Orion Kimberly was 61st (17:59.1), Justin Maxwell was 72nd (18:07.1) and Nick Monheim took 107th (18:24.9).

Other top finishers for county teams included:

— Class 3A boys: Elias Spence, Shippensburg, 69th, 18:05.2; Marcus Cooley, Waynesboro, 121st, 18:32.5

— Class 3A girls: Teddi Powell, Shippensburg, 85th, 21:36.1

— Class 2A boys: Danny Miller, G-A, 48th, 18:30.8; Brandon Boyer, James Buchanan, 75th, 19:01.2

— Class 2A girls: Willow Hurley, G-A, 51st, 22:05.2; Hailey Embree, JB, 81st, 23:12.7
