Blazer girls win 4-3 in overtime

Kaitlin Provard scored four minutes into sudden-death overtime to give the Cumberland Valley Christian Blazers a 4-3 victory over Heritage Academy in a Mason-Dixon Christian Conference girls soccer game Monday.

“Kaitlin reacted quickly following a Heritage foul and set up for a free kick from about 25 yards out,” CVCS coach Paul Lundy said. “While Heritage was scrambling to assemble a wall, Kaitlin knocked the ball into the back of the net for the game winner. Her heads-up play (to quickly take the free kick) was a result of her knowing the rules and understanding how to play smartly.”

Provard’s goal capped a Blazer comeback from a late deficit. The Blazers trailed 3-2 when Kyleigh Teal scored an unassisted goal with three minutes left in regulation.

Laurel Reitz and Ryleigh Timmons also scored for the Blazers (2-0, 2-0 MDCC), who led 2-1 at halftime, and goalkeeper Jalen Moats made 10 saves.

“We did not adjust well in the second half and Heritage outplayed us, outhustled us and outcoached us for most of the second frame,” Lundy said. “It appeared to me that we thought we could just hang on to our 2-1 halftime lead and ride out the second half. We had numerous mistakes defensively and were lucky that Heritage was only able to capitalize on two of them. I was very pleased with the resilience the team showed late in the game. We have a lot to improve on, but it was great to see the team pull out a win tonight.”
