Blazers open baseball season with win, tie

The Cumberland Valley Christian Blazers opened their baseball season Friday with a win and a tie against Carroll Christian of Westminster, Md., in a non-league doubleheader.

The Blazers defeated Carroll 6-2 behind the pitching of Caleb Fisler and the hitting of Blake Witter.

Fisler went five innings, striking out six, walking two and allowing six hits and one earned run. Witter went 3-for-3 and scored two runs as the Blazers grabbed a 6-0 lead after three innings. Also for the Blazers, DeVon Landis went 2-for-2, A.J. Hetzer doubled, scored twice and drove in two runs, and Kole Faokunla contributed a pair of RBI.

In the other game, Witter drove in the tying run in the bottom of the seventh inning as the game ended in a 4-4 tie.

Fisler collected three hits, including a double, and drove in the first run for the Blazers, who trailed 2-0 going into the sixth inning. Witter added two hits, and Blaine Minnier drove in two runs with a sixth-inning single to put the Blazers temporarily ahead 3-2. Leadoff hitter Cole Heck added a double.

Witter pitched two innings with four strikeouts and picked up the victory in relief of Minnier, who struck out five, walked two, and allowed four hits and one run over five innings.
