Trojans girls use inside power to win FC Tip-Off crown

GREENCASTLE — It isn’t always true in basketball that the biggest team wins.

But that’s certainly what happened Saturday evening in the girls championship of the Franklin County Tip-Off Basketball Tournament.

Chambersburg used its considerable size advantage right from the opening whistle to take a big lead and Greencastle-Antrim never recovered in a 54-39 defeat on the Blue Devils’ home court.

“They have two big girls and they executed their game plan,” G-A coach Mike Rhine said.

Taylor Vrabel tallied 17 points for Chambersburg and tourney MVP Ashley Adams put up 16. By halftime, Adams had 12 and Vrabel 9 as their team held a 32-14 lead.

Trojan coach Barry Purvis said, “We have to use our size and we knew it’d be tough for them to match up with those two girls inside. Plus, we have some good complementary players.”

Adams was difficult to stop from the left block in the first half, and Vrabel hit a three and a couple of follow shots from the other side. Chambersburg held a pair of 20-point leads until the Blue Devils’ offense began finding some rhythm in the second half.

Bridging the end of the third and start of the fourth, G-A scored eight consecutive points on buckets by four different players to rally to within 42-31.

But Ariana Burke dropped in a tough turnaround jumper in the lane and Gabby Lecuona followed with a nice drive down the middle, helping Chambersburg score 10 of the next 12 points and salt the game away.

“We got a little lackadaisical in the second half, but overall I thought the defense played great,” Purvis said. “Burke hit a nice shot — she is capable of scoring more. The girls have gotten a lot more confidence.”

Ashley True scored 14 points and energetic Ashley Noblit had 8 for Greencastle.

Rhine said, “At least we can say we won the second half (25-22). I told the kids the next time you play against somebody that big, it won’t be the first time, and the next time you play against somebody that quick, it won’t be the first time, either.”
