Chambersburg boys capture FC Tip-Off title

GREENCASTLE — Chambersburg’s advantage in size was not a factor in the first half of the 8th Franklin County Tip-Off Tournament boys basketball championship game.

But the Trojan big men made their presence felt from the start of the third quarter, giving Chambersburg a lead it never relinquished in a 51-46 victory over host Greencastle-Antrim on Saturday night.

Trailing 26-22 at halftime, the Trojans got back-to-back baskets from Tyler Collier to open the third quarter, then five points by Joel Torres to take a 31-30 lead — its first of the game.

When Evan Shreffler dropped in a 3-pointer — he had been hearing chants of “Air ball!” all night — it gave Chambersburg a 34-30 lead and the Blue Devils never got closer than two points again.

“We emphasized getting the ball inside from the beginning of the game, but we didn’t execute in the first half,” Trojan coach Shawn Shreffler said. “We didn’t establish what we wanted to, but we did in the second half. And the effort on the boards was better, too.”

G-A coach Rick Lewis said, “We forced them to match up with us in the first half, and they went small. But they came back with a bigger lineup in the second, and it got to be a very, very physical game. Then it became a law of physics that worked against us.

“And when we packed it in, they hit a few shots over us.”

While tourney MVP Cade Brindle scored 10 of his 11 points in the first half, and Collier and Torres helped in the second, the scoring was spread around.

For the Blue Devils, Brandon Stuhler put in 11 of his 15 in the first half, and Bryan Gembe carried the load in the second half, scoring 14 of his 17.  His seven buckets all came on strong drives to the hoop with defenders draped all over him.

“A lot of his shots were a high degree of difficulty — they weren’t open looks,” Shreffler said. “We ran a variety of guys at him, but it didn’t matter.”

Lewis said, “They were making it hard for us to run our offense, so we went to a 1-4 set and let Bryan go.”

Shreffler said, “Winning this kind of game early in the season is awesome, especially on the road in a great atmosphere like this was.”
