Chbg. roundup: Volleyball knocks off CV; field hockey, girls soccer earn wins

FIELD HOCKEY
Chambersburg 2, East Pennsboro 1: The Trojans got a game-winning goal from Libby Leonard on Wednesday evening to earn a Mid Penn Colonial victory on the road against the Panthers.

Libby Leonard

Chambersburg closed out its season with a 7-8-2 record (7-3-2 MPC), winning 3 of its last 5 games. The Trojans rank No. 16 in the District 3 Class 3A rankings, with the top 14 teams qualifying for the playoffs.

“This was a great way to end the season,” Chambersburg coach Rachael Sanders said. “The girls really fought for this win and played for each other from start to finish. They wanted to get one more win, especially for our seniors, and they came together as a team to make that happen.”

Reagan Barrett scored the first goal for the Trojans, tipping in a pass from Leonard made from the top of the circle. East Pennsboro evened it 1-1 on a goal by Kendra Chubb.

On the winning goal, Leonard ripped a shot past the goalie and into the cage from the top of the circle.

Sanders said, “I’m incredibly proud of their effort, determination and the way they finished the season.”

Malia Cramer

GIRLS SOCCER
Chambersburg 1, State College 0: The Trojans’ defense posted a shutout and a breakaway goal made the difference in a Mid Penn Commonwealth victory on the road over the Little Lions on Wednesday evening.

Chambersburg coach Paul Unruh said, “Overall, it was our most complete game of the season. We were organized and aggressive from the first minute to the final whistle.”

The goal came after Maddie Mills flicked the ball into the path of Malia Cramer, who was already on the run. Cramer carried the ball about 35 yards, then beat the State College goalkeeper with a shot tucked inside the far post.

“We rode out periods of domination from the opposition, and had stretches where we did nothing but attack,” Unruh said.

Chambersburg finished 6-11-1, with a 3-9 Commonwealth record.

GIRLS VOLLEYBALL
Chambersburg 3, Cumberland Valley 1: The Trojans won a huge match at New Kingstown on Wednesday night, beating the Eagles in a Mid Penn Commonwealth contest.

Lexi Poe

The win vaulted Chambersburg (11-6), which has won 7 of its last 8 matches, over CV in the District 3 Class 6A power rankings. The Trojans are now No. 9 and could play at Waynesboro (No. 8) next Tuesday in the first round. The pairings will be released later this week.

“What a match!” Chambersburg coach Ty Frelin said. “This was such a fun match to be a part of, and, of course, coming out on top is an added bonus. This was a great match between two really good teams.”

The Trojans took Game 1 by a 25-22 score, but the Eagles (8-6), who had won 3-0 in an earlier matchup, tied it with a 25-21 win. But Chambersburg took control and won the last 2 games, 25-22 and 25-23.

Kasey Moser put up some good numbers — 19 kills, 18 digs and 3 blocks. Kylee Perry was right there, with 28 digs, 15 assists and 16 service points.

Natalie Miller helped with 14 points, Ayla Whiteley made 4 blocks, Olivia Shearer knocked down 8 kills, Grace Myers led with 17 assists and Lexi Poe contributed 17 digs.

Frelin said, “We played really well defensively tonight and kept them from getting any runs on us. We made the plays when we needed to and were really scrappy on defense.”

BOYS SOCCER
State College 1, Chambersburg 0: The Little Lions picked up a goal early in the second half and rode that to a Mid Penn Commonwealth victory over the Trojans at Trojan Stadium on Wednesday night.

Chambersburg coach Marc Furfaro said, “We didn’t play our best game. We had a decent first half, but couldn’t find a goal. In the second half we came out a little flat, they got one, and we couldn’t find a response.”

The Trojans finished the regular season with a 9-7-1 record (5-6-1 MPC). They currently sit at No. 14 in the District 3 Class 4A rankings, which would put them in the playoffs (top 16 advance). The first-round games are scheduled for next Tuesday at the home of the higher-seeded team.

Furfaro said, “Our focus now is Tuesday. The rest doesn’t matter; it all comes down to how well we perform Tuesday. I know this group of special players will step up and make a postseason run this year.”
