McConnellsburg girls and boys soccer record shutout wins

McConnellsburg 2, Windber 0. The Lady Spartans defeated the Windber Lady Ramblers in conference play Oct. 4, extending their winning streak to 12 games. The victory marked their 11th shutout of the season and eighth in a row.

The first half ended scoreless, with McConnellsburg leading 16-6 in shots and 14-2 in shots on goal (SOG).

In the 28th minute of the second half, a Spartan throw-in and Molly McKelvy’s kick down the right side drew five defenders toward Laynee Hendershot near the goal-line corner. The play opened the center of the penalty area for Gemma Gordon and Marin DeShong. Hendershot crossed to Gordon, who beat goalkeeper Rylee Baer one-on-one with a powerful strike for the game’s first goal, quieting the home crowd. With 13 minutes remaining, DeShong received a pass from Gordon and scored the second goal from inside the 18-yard line. The Spartan defense limited the Ramblers to one SOG after halftime and drew nearly three times as many Windber fouls, including one that resulted in a yellow card.

DeShong led the team with seven SOG and 10 total shots, while Gordon recorded five SOG on seven shots.

Totals: MHS — 2 goals, 32 shots, 24 SOG, 3 corners, 3 goalkeeper saves, 3 fouls and 6 free kicks. WIN — 0 goals, 12 shots, 3 SOG, 2 corners, 21 goalkeeper saves, 8 fouls, 1 yellow card and 3 free kicks.

The Lady Spartans have continued their dominant season, outscoring opponents 72-2.

McConnellsburg Unravels Forbes Road

McConnellsburg 12, Forbes Road 0: The Spartans defeated the visiting Forbes Road Cardinals in an October 5 conference match, extending their winning streak to 11 games.

McConnellsburg scored nine first-half goals. Nearly eight minutes in, Callen Mellott set up Hoyt Glenn for a short shot from the 6-yard line. Three minutes later, Lincoln McKelvey scored off another Mellott assist. In the 14th minute, Mellott delivered a corner kick to Glenn, who side-footed it past the goalkeeper. Two minutes later, Noah Jefferson carried the ball down the right side and crossed near the goal line. After a Cardinals defender deflected the ball and the goalkeeper mishandled it, Chris Ebersole scored during the ensuing scramble. In the 23rd minute, Glenn found Jace Fletcher for a clean shot from the 6-yard line. Two minutes later, Ethan Lang passed to Fletcher at the center of the 18-yard box, where Fletcher’s shot struck the crossbar and went in. With 18 minutes remaining, Grady Shives fed Glenn for a goal from 19 yards. With five minutes left, McKelvey won a loose ball at the goal line against the goalkeeper and two defenders. With under three minutes remaining, Glenn completed the first-half scoring with an unassisted run from the 25, dribbling past four defenders before finishing one-on-one from the 6-yard line. The Spartans took a commanding 9-0 lead into halftime.

Glenn scored in the first minute of the second half, taking a pass from McKelvy at the 18-yard line and driving to the 6 before finishing. In the ninth minute, McKelvey scored from 15 yards off a Lang assist. Ebersole added the final unassisted goal with 17 minutes remaining.  Glenn led the team with five goals, 12 shots on goal, and 16 shots.

Totals — MHS: 12 goals, 69 shots, 44 shots on goal, 15 corners, 8 assists, 1 goalkeeper save, 1 foul, and 1 free kick. FR: 0 goals, 1 shot, 1 shot on goal, 0 corners, 32 goalkeeper saves, 1 foul, and 1 free kick.

The Spartans (11-0, 5-0 ICC-E) will host Berlin Brothersvalley in a cross-conference match at 7:15 p.m. on October 8.
