CHAMBERSBURG AT ALTOONA
Game data: The Trojans travel to Mansion Park to face the Mountain Lions on Friday, 7 p.m. … Mid Penn Commonwealth game … Live stream on MidPennBroadcasting.com.
Last week: Chambersburg (1-4, 1-3 MPC) defeated Central Dauphin 19-14 … Altoona (3-2, 3-1 MPC) was beaten by Harrisburg, 40-20.
The opponent: The Mountain Lions have switched from being an option offense to a spread offense with some option still in play … And, Altoona is having a decent season so far, going 3-1 in the Commonwealth, with wins over Central Dauphin, CD East and Carlisle … Mehki Jackson runs the offense as the QB and is definitely a dual threat — he has run for 368 yards on 76 carries (5.0 avg.), with 8 TDs, and thrown for 458 yards (39-for-75, 45.8%), 5 TDs and 2 int. … Myzick Clemons is the top back, with 80 caries for 511 yards (6.4 avg.) and 5 scores … Cody Chathams (8-113, 1 TD) and Noah Stump (7-111, 2) lead the receivers … Noah Stains (33) and Khyaire Hall (28) are the top tacklers … “This is not the Altoona of old,” Chambersburg coach Gary Carter said. “They run something close to what we do on offense, their line is solid, the quarterback can run around and hurt you, and the running back is big. They are definitely better than last year and solid all the way around.”
Coach’s viewpoint: The Trojans are again dealing with significant injuries, with two more starters potentially out for Friday … They have had 10-15 starters miss at least one game … Carter said, “We’re worse off this week than last week with injuries. We just can’t win in that respect. We have struggled with injuries and in a lot of cases we don’t know until late in the week who might be able to play. The good thing is, we’ve had some younger kids get in there and everybody is fighting and playing hard.”
Unsung: QB Justin Deneen was battling to be the starting QB until he got hurt in the preseason … He stepped in for the injured Cam Green 2 weeks ago and put up some great numbers last week — 26-for-39, 295 yards, 3 TDs … Carter said, “From his first week in there to last week, Justin really improved. He got more confidence and he found the open receiver. And his receivers — Lucas Ocker, Jashaun Palmer, Seth Gilliam and Isaiah Ferguson — made some crucial plays.”
Trojan statistics: Rushing — Malachi Tasker 72-209 (2.9 avg.), 1 TD … Passing — Cam Green 34-59 (57.6%), 532 yards, 4 TDs, 2 int.; Justin Deneen 35-60 (58.3%), 404 yards, 3 TDs, 0 int. … Receiving: Jashaun Palmer 16-317, 1 TD; Lucas Ocker 12-235, 4 TDs; Tasker 9-110; Isaiah Ferguson 8-102, 1 TD; Seth Gilliam 11-89, 1 TD … Tackles — Deakon Snavely 53 (5 tackles for loss, 2 forced fumbles); Colton Horst 37; Devon Nalewak 36 (2); Gilliam 34 (2 sacks)
WEST PERRY AT GREENCASTLE-ANTRIM
Game data: The Blue Devils will welcome the unbeaten Mustangs to Kaley Field on Friday, 7 p.m. … Mid Penn Colonial game … Live stream available on MidPennBroadcasting.com.
Last week: West Perry (5-0, 2-0 MPC) topped East Pennsboro, 28-20 … Greencastle (3-2, 1-1 MPC) booked a 45-7 win over Boiling Springs, a team West Perry beat 38-13 two weeks ago.
The opponent: The Mustangs have averaged 32 points per game, using a mid-line option offense that spreads the defense out with isolation plays … “They’re got a pretty good line and the quarterback runs the offense really well,” G-A coach Jason Thurston said. “They make you make a decision to take the dive back or the QB, so we have to play good assignment defense.” … QB Hayden Fleisher has hit 62% of his passes (46-for-74) for 767 yards, 8 TDs and 1 pick, while running for 118 yards and 7 TDs … RBs Mason Sprecher (69-395, 1 TD) and Landon Wilson (58-383, 2) have contributed a lot … The top receivers are Trent Hockenberry (13-230, 3), Marshall Etter (12-273, 2) and Mason Page (10-156, 2) … Christian Laughlin leads in tackles with 52 (3.5 for loss).
Coach’s viewpoint: Thurston said, “They are unbeaten and they’re a good football team. But we have played two really good opponents and they haven’t yet. In Class 4A (of District 3), according to the rankings in strength of schedule, they have the easiest schedule. We’re healthy, and we feel like we have more depth than they do. We feel pretty good, and we had some really good practices this week. It should be a good football game to watch.”
Unsung: Greencastle ILB Elijah Ambrose, who made 9 tackles last week, including 3 for a loss … Thurston said, “He played inside linebacker last year and got hurt. This year he started on the defensive line, but we have now moved him back to inside linebacker, and he had a really good game last week.”
Blue Devil statistics: Rushing — Spencer Long 37-258, 4 TDs; Landon Kagarise 33-187, 4 TDs … Passing — Gavin Logsdon 28-for-48 (47.9%), 369 yards, 4 TDs, 0 int. … Receiving — Wyatt Hull 9-226, 2 TDs; Long 4-101, 1 TD … Tackles — Ambrose 26 (4 for loss); Braden Eckert 23; Luke Hull 20 (3 TFL); Dom Angelini (19).
