Chambersburg 2, Shippensburg 0: The Greyhounds put up a good fight against the Trojans, who won their season opener in a non-league contest at Trojan Stadium on Tuesday night.

Malia Cramer was the difference-maker for Chambersburg, scoring both goals unassisted.

Trojan coach Paul Unruh said, “Shippensburg was a tough opponent to break down and it took two high quality long-distance shots to beat them.

“We played a strong, cohesive defensive game. Ship had some rapid counterattacks, but we were able to collectively slow them down and neutralize the threat.”

GIRLS VOLLEYBALL
Chambersburg 3, Central Dauphin East 0: Trojans took on the Panthers in their season opener on Tuesday night at CASHS Field House and came away with a shutout win.

Chambersburg won by scores of 25-9, 25-12 and 25-17.

“It was a good start to our season tonight,” said Trojan coach Ty Frelin, who is starting his 41st year with the progtram, which is in its 50th season. “We did well with the opportunities that we had. It was a good chance to give everyone some court time.”

Kylie Perry led the team in service points with 12, assists with 13 and added 9 digs. Kasey Moser was the kills leader with 9 and totaled 12 points.

Also for Chambersburg, Maddie Rydbom knocked down 5 blocks, Olivia Shearer and Ayla Whiteley each had 4 kills, Grace Myers had 10 assists, and among the leaders in digs were Natalie Miller (16), Lizzy Porter (7) and Marlie Mewman (7).

BOYS CROSS COUNTRY
Chambersburg 15, State College 40; Chambersburg 19, Cumberland Valley 40: The Trojans opened the Mid Penn Commonwealth season with a big double-dual meet Tuesday at State College, beating the host Little Lions and the Eagles.

“Our whole team really showed their fitness in perservering on a hot day,” Chambersbug coach Jim Boyer said, “and their flexibility in having to warm up twice after a one-hour heat delay.”

Boston Vincenti led the Trojans by crossing the finish line first in a time of 18:26.5. He was closely followed by Cole Lehman in third (18:42.3), Liam Coy in fourth (18:43.1), Tobias Willson in fifth (18:56.3) and Aaron Goshorn in sixth (19:12.6).

Boyer said, “Those five guys showed their cross country experience, running controlled for the first 2K, then separating themselves well in the final 3K.”

GIRLS CROSS COUNTRY
State College 26, Chambersburg 32; Chambersburg 23, Cumberland Valley 32: The Trojans gave the favored Little Lions a battle before falling by 6 poiints in a Mid Penn Commonwealth tri-meet on Tuesday afternoon on the road, but they did take a win over the Eagles.

Chambersburg coach Chris Monheim said, “We got the results we expected today, with a win over CV and a close loss to State College. It was a pretty rough day from a weather standpoint and I thought our girls ran fairly well.”

Natalie Quinn took first place for Chambersburg with a time of 20:21.2, five seconds ahead of the runner-up. Lilly Spohn ran a 21:30.5 to place third and Bella Rife placed sixth in 21:45.7. Also scoring for the Trojans were Taliya Raber (14th, 22:52.3) and Kaylie Savage (18th, 22:52.3).

“Natalie looks very under control as our top runner and was backed up by strong races from Lilly and Bella. Rife had an outstanding last mile to allow us to pull away from CV.”
