Trojans battered by Muhlenberg in D-3 baseball final

LANCASTER — The weekend rain finally disappeared in time to provide a picture-perfect night for baseball.

But it was a bright night for only one team Monday evening at Penn Medicine Field in Lancaster in the District 3 Class 6A championship game.

No. 11 seed Muhlenberg completed a 4-game run through districts by handing No. 5 seed Chambersburg a 10-0, six-inning whacking, in a game in which the Muhls dominated in every aspect of the game.

“”We’ve been playing ahead lately and our pitchers have been ahead (in the count), but not tonight,” Trojan shortstop Aaron Vasquez said. “We’re just going to have to pick our energy back up and get ready for next week.”

Chambersburg (17-7) will play a first-round of the PIAA Tournament next Monday vs. the No. 5 finisher from District 1. It is likely to be played at Greene Township Park.

Trojan coach Scott Folmar said, “I don’t think the game was too big for them. The guys seemed loose before the game. We’ve been so good at getting ahead this year, but this one got out of hand early.”

Muhlenberg pitcher Cole Moody pitched a 3-hitter, walking one and hitting a batter, but was constantly ahead in the count and struck out 6.

Vasquez, who was 2-for-2 and was hit by a pitch, said. “He had the lead and he pounded the zone. He got ahead a lot. But it wasn’t so much him as it was we beat ourselves tonight.”

The top of the second inning, which seemed to last forever, did Chambersburg in. Starting pitcher Brady Truett could not locate his pitches. He walked three of the first five batters in the inning, and allowed a sacrifice fly and a 2-run single by Cooper Burr for 3 runs before he was relieved by Hayden Lyons.

Then came a very weird play. The first batter Lyons faced was Marvin Frias, who bunted back to Lyons. He picked the ball up and flipped it to catcher Ceagan Truett, who attempted to tag the runner from third, Carter Burr. There was no call made by the home plate umpire and players stood around, not knowing what was happening.

Finally, Burr stepped on the plate and walked toward his dugout. Still no signal. Then the umpire must have said that run scored, because the Muhls’ dugout exploded with yells.

Apparently, Burr did not originally touch the plate and Truett did not make a tag. But everybody was confused.

From that point on, Chambersburg couldn’t get anything going and couldn’t stop Muhlenberg from scoring. The Muhls put up two more runs in the fourth on an RBI single by Gavin Moody and an RBI double by Cole Moody.

Another scored in the fifth in a single, two wild pitches and a fielder’s choice grounder.

In the sixth, Liam Vargas, who reached base in all 4 of his at-bats, chased in a run with a single. Cole Moody hit a run-scoring single and Mike Canfield had a sac fly to make it 10-0.

“We just didn’t hit today,” Folmar said. “Their pitcher threw strikes and kept us off-balance with his breaking ball. And we swung at a lot of fastballs out of the zone, which is something we din’t usually do. They got the lead and took us out of our style of play.

“We’re just going to have to regroup and get ready for next week.”
