BASEBALL
Chambersburg 6, Altoona 2: Already clinging to a 3-2 lead, the Trojans produced 3 runs in the bottom of the sixth inning on Thursday afternoon to defeat Altoona in a Mid Penn Commonwealth game at Greene Township Park.
With one out in the sixth, Hayden Lyons hit a one-out single for Chambersburg (13-4, 8-3 MPC) and scored on a double to left field by Konner McMullen. On a fly ball to right by Ryne Mills, McMullen moved to third, and he scored on a passed ball.
Aaron Vasquez singled and scooted to third on a base hit by Brady Truett, then he also scored on a passed ball.
“Getting those three in the sixth was really, really nice,” Trojan coach Scott Folmar said. “It was a good way to end the week and get ready for some tough matchups next week.”
Mills (6-0) pitched the first 6.2 innings before his pitch count ran out, allowing 4 hits, 4 walks and 2 runs while striking out 6. Lyons got the final two outs.
Folmar said, “Mills wasn’t quite as sharp today as he has been. He had a lot of two- and three-ball counts early, but he battled into the seventh. He didn’t have his best stuff, but he almost threw a complete game.”
In the bottom of the third inning, Mills clubbed a triple to centerfield, Vasquez walked and Brady Truett brought them both home with a double to center. After the Mountain Lions (8-8, 6-6 MPC) tied it in the top of the fourth, Chambersburg took a 3-2 lead in the bottom of the inning. Devon Nalewak smacked a double, and scored when Altoona made two consecutive errors.
“Their pitcher (Ari Holzer) kept us off-balance and made us put the ball in play,” Folmar said. “Their defense was pretty good except for a couple times.”
SOFTBALL
Chambersburg 14, Altoona 7: Sanay Jones had a huge day at the plate — really big — and in the circle to lead the Trojans over the Mountain Lions in a Mid Penn Commonwealth game Thursday afternoon on the road.
Jones had 5 at-bats and collected a pair of home runs and a double, scored 3 times and drove in 6 runs for Chambersburg (12-3, 9-2 MPC). She also took over pitching duties for the final 3 innings and allowed only one baserunner (on a walk) while striking out 4.
In her first inning, the fifth, she entered the game with the bases loaded and nobody out in a 7-7 game, and fanned 3 straight batters from Altoona (3-11, 1-9 MPC).
“Not to overshadow her two bombs, but that was huge,” Trojan coach Chris Skultety said. “Then we hit some shots to open the game up.”
Chambersburg scored 2 runs in the first inning when Kylee Perry was hit by a pitch and Marley Onomastico belted her first career home run to left. Altoona then got a pair of 2-run home runs, by Jayda Yost and Skyler Reed to lead 4-2.
The Trojans put up 5 runs in the fifth, loading the bases on Perry walk, an error and a walk to Kendall Flory. Hensley Brookens brought in 2 with a double, then Jones cranked a 3-run blast to left field.
With the score 7-7 entering the sixth, Chambersburg tallied 5 times, two on errors, while Jones, Erissa Varner and Perry each hit RBI doubles. In the seventh, Brookens doubled and Jones followed with a bomb to center.
“It was a crazy game,” Skultery. “A long ride to get to a mud pit and we weren’t even sure we’d play the game. Then I thought we took them lightly, but our offense was able to overcome and take care of business the last two innings. It was one of those games that you have to find a way to win.”
GIRLS LACROSSE
Chambersburg 9, Carlisle 5: The Trojans turned in one of their best defensive games of the season and it resulted in a Mid Penn Commonwealth victory over the Thundering Herd at Trojan Stadium on Thursday night.
“The defense was the difference tonight,” Chambersburg coach Shane Henry said. “The girls played outstanding, and Reese Heverley was so amazing in goal tonight, with 11 saves. And we caused 14 turnovers.”
Mollie Yardley-Gontz contributed 4 caused turnovers and picked up 4 groundballs.
“She is really playing at a high level right now,” Henry said.
Brynn Sekel led the Trojans (9-5, 9-5 MPC) with 3 goals, 4 caused TOs, 2 groundballs and 3 draw controls. Reagan Barrett scored 2 goals and Adele Henry had 2 goals and a CTO. Savannah White had a goal and a draw and Kaitlyn Brady had 3 draws to go with 1 CTO and 1 groundball.
