SOFTBALL
Chambersburg 2, Shippensburg 1: Marley Onomastico’s RBI single with two outs in the bottom of the seventh inning lifted the Trojans to a narrow victory over the Greyhounds on Saturday afternoon at Norlo Park in a non-league contest.

Tied 1-1, Erissa Varner delivered a one-out single to left field to get the winning rally started against Ship pitcher Kalia Soverns. Varner stole second base, then Addy Gsell lined out.

Kylee Perry, who was 2-for-2 to that point, was intentionally walked. Both runners moved up on steals, and Onomastico came through with her second game-winning hit in 3 days, grounding a single into left field.

“It was great to see O get that hit after the intentional walk, and after having a golden opportunity in the fifth that didn’t work out,” Chambersburg coach Chris Skultety said.

“That had to be a great ballgame for all the fans and kids (it was Youth Day) to watch between two quality teams. We continue to battle despite our recent struggles to put the ball in play on the ground with runners on base.”

Soverns and Trojan pitcher Issie Slimmer had battled through a scoreless game for four innings. In the top of the fifth, Anelise Musser led off with a base hit for the Greyhounds (8-5). After two outs, Brynley Henderson singled, then Musser scored when the third baseman made an error.

But Cambersburg (9-2) came right back to tie the game in the bottom of the fifth. With one out, Varner bunted for a hit, then stole second. She stayed put when a grounder to third by Gsell was misplayed. Perry then came through with an RBI single to left.

Soverns stranded two runners in that inning and got out of a bases-loaded jam in the first. She allowed 8 hits, walked 2 and struck out 5.

Slimmer held Ship to 5 hits and 1 walk while striking out 5.

Varner and Perry each had 2 hits for the Trojans, and Gsell and Kendall Flory belted doubles.

Skultety said, “Slimmer continues to keep us in games and the offense is doing just enough. Perry is really starting to hit and is seeing the ball well, and Varner continues to set the table.

“We have the battle for first place (in the Commonwealth Division) on Monday (the Trojans host Central Dauphin) and the girls will be ready.”
