BASEBALL
Chambersburg 5, Cumberland Valley 1: Ryne Mills was the man for the Trojans on offense and defense Thursday night, contributing mightily to a Mid Penn Commonwealth victory over the Eagles on the road.

Ryne Mills

Mills (4-0) pitched a complete game, giving up 6 hits and 1 walk, while fanning 7 CV batters. At the plate, he had 3 hits in 4 at-bats, including a triple, scored twice and knocked in a run.

“He was very good on the mound and had a good day at the plate,” Chambersburg coach Scott Folmar said. “He battled them on the mound and did a really good job. In the sixth, he had a really good at-bat, getting 11 or 12 pitches before hitting a triple.”

Chambersburg (11-1, 6-1 MPC) posted 3 runs in the top of he first inning off CV starter Caden Johnson. Mills led off with a hit, Aaron Vasquez bunted for a hit and Brady Truett walked with one out to load the bases. After another out, Johnson lost his control, walking Devon Nalewak and Matt Murphy back-to-back to score 2 runs, and then hit Hayden Lyons with a pitch to make it 3-0.

Cumberland Valley (5-6, 3-5 MPC) scored its run in the fifth, but the Trojans came right back for some insurance in the sixth. Lyons led off with a single and Bryce Deneen sacrificed him to second. Mills clubbed his line-drive triple to center to score a run, and he came home on a sacrifice fly by Vasquez.

Folmar said, “We did some little things right tonight — we had two sacrifice bunts and one sac fly, and we had another sac fly called out (for leaving the base too quickly). Overall, it was a good game. We played clean on defense again.”

The Trojans hold a two-game lead in the Commonwealth standings.
