G-A roundup: Blue Devils stay unbeaten in baseball

BASEBALL
Greencastle-Antrim 15, Northern 4: The Blue Devils’ offense had the hot hand again Monday afternoon in Dillsburg and G-A clobbered the Polar Bears in a Mid Penn Colonial game.

Greencastle is now 6-0 (4-0 MPC), and is averaging just over 13 runs per game. Northern is 1-4 (1-3 MPC).

Mason Mellott

“Things are going well and we’re enjoying having fun,” Blue Devil coach Eric Shaner said. “We’ll get ready for a big game (at home) against Big Spring on Wednesday.”

Like several other G-A scripts this year, it took an early lead (2-0) in the first, but Northern came back with 4 runs off Avery Horst in the bottom of the inning. Greencastle tied it in the second and then got it in gear, scoring 1 run in the third, 5 in the fourth, 2 in the fifth and 3 in the sixth.

In the first inning, Horst clubbed a 2-run double to put his team in the lead. In the third, Mason Mellott’s double drove in a run that gave G-A the lead for good at 5-4.

In the fourth inning, Greencastle used a base hit, an infield single, 3 walks, 2 stolen bases, 2 fielder’s choice plays and a pair of errors to score 5 runs.

For the Blue Devils, Horst and Mellott each had a double and 3 RBIs, Andrew Weaver (1-for-4) and Bryce Davidson (2-2, 2 walks, double, triple) each scored 4 times, Cam Rakaczewski was 2-for-4 with a double and 2 RBIs, and Manny Brookens was 2-for-4 with a triple and RBI.

Shaner said, “I was happy we scored in the first, and then we gave up the lead. Avery was just hitting too much of the plate. He got srtonger as the game went on and was attacking once we got the lead. We played error-free and it was nice to tack on those extra runs.”

Horst went the distance, allowing 7 hits and 4 earned runs, walked 1 and fanned 4.
