Chbg. roundup: Trojan baseball & softball defeat Altoona

BASEBALL
Chambersburg 6, Altoona 2: The pitching staff remained tough and the offense produced some really good at-bats and the Trojans kept their early momentum going with a Mid Penn Commonwealth victory over the Mountain Lions on the road Monday afternoon.

Aaron Vasquez

“The competition within our team has been great,” Chambersburg coach Scott Folmar said. “They really push each other.”

The Trojans (7-1, 4-1 MPC) jumped on Carter McConnell, the starter for Altoona (2-2, 2-2 MPC) for a pair of runs in the first inning (RBI singles by Brady Truett and Aiden Appleby), and 2 more in the second. Ceagan Truett drove in one run with a hit, Appleby was intentionally walked to load the bases, and Brycen Murray came through with a 2-out RBI on a single to left.

“It was nice to see those early runs to get the lead,” Folmar said.

Hayden Lyons held the Mountain Lions to just 1 hit through 4 innings, but they got to him a bit in the fifth, scoring runs on a single by Nick Kraft and a bases-loaded walk to make it 4-2. Folmar replaced Lyons with Cam Wadel. The next batter hit a one-hopper to the left of shortstop Aaron Vasquez, who caught the ball, stepped on second and threw to first for a double play to end the threat.

Chambersburg scored two helpful insurance runs in the top of the seventh. Vasquez led off with a double, was bunted to third by Ceagan Truett and ran home on a sacrifice fly to left by Brady Truett. Appleby’s double moved a runner to third and Brycen Murray scored him with a sac fly to right.

Folmar said, “Altoona got two guys on base in the seventh, so there was a huge difference between being up 4-2 and being up 6-2. Those insurance runs were just how you draw ’em up. It’s rare to have two sac flies in one inning, but we had some really good at-bats there.

“Hayden pitched well, and maybe ran out of gas a little in the fifth, but Cam came in and got us out of a jam and had two good innings.”

SOFTBALL
Chambersburg 13, Altoona 3: The Trojans scored in 5 of the 6 innings to hand the Mountain Lions a Mid Penn Commonwealth drubbing on Monday afternoon at Norlo Park.

Josey Snavely

“After seeing Altoona hang with CV (4-3 loss), it was important we stayed focused throughout the game,” Chambersburg coach Chris Skultety said. “Especially because of all the stuff taking us out of our routine (noon game, no school, playing on Field 4 instead of Field 1).

“The girls came with energy early, lost it a bit after being up 7-0, then regained it to finish it out with our best at-bats later in the game.”

In the bottom of the first, Kylee Perry smacked a 2-run double for a 2-0 lead. In the second, Josey Snavely produced an RBI double and two more runs scored on bases-loaded walks to Sanay Jones and Perry, making it 5-0.

In the third, 2 more runs crossed the plate. With 2 outs, consecutive singles by Snavely, Varner and Addy Gsell made it 7-0. In the fifth, Sanay Jones tripled and scored via an overthrow on the play. Chambersburg (5-1, 4-1 MPC) ended the game in the sixth with 3 runs — Hensley Brookens had a 2-run double and she scored on a hit by Snavely.

Skultety said, “Varner and Perry continue to get on base and produce for us. Sanay hit the ball hard and that triple would have been a home run on any field swith a fence — she hit it about 240. Josey also had a nice day at the plate and we’re hoping this gets her going to turn the order over.”

The Trojans rapped out 14 hits, led by Perry (3-for-3, 3 RBIs), Gsell (3-for-3, 2 RBIs), Snavely (3-for-4, 2 RBIs) and Varner (2-for-3, 1 RBI).

Issie Slimmer pitched the first 4 innings to earn the win, giving up 2 unearned runs on 4 hits and no walks. Sanay Jones tossed 2 innings, allowing 4 hits and a run, and striking out 2.
