BASEBALL
Chambersburg 9, Mifflin County 2: The Huskies gave the Trojans a little boost and they took advantage of it Thursday afternoon to take a Mid Penn Commonwealth victory at Greene Township Park.
Chambersburg (5-1, 3-1 MPC) drew 9 walks and Mifflin County contributed with 3 errors. The Trojans totaled only 6 hits.
“It wasn’t the prettiest game, but we got some breathing room early (6 runs in the first 2 innings),” Trojan coach Scott Folmar said. “They gave us plenty of free passes and we took advantage a couple of times. But we had a 6-0 lead and they scored twice to make it 6-2. We had chances to put it away earlier — we need to keep scoring in those situations.”
Brycen Murray and Matt Murphy each had 2 hits for the Trojans, and Aaron Vasquez drive in a pair of runs. Konner McMullen and Devon Nalewak each drew 2 walks.
Ryne Mills did ther work on the mound, going the distance. He allowed 6 hits, no earned runs, walked none and fanned 9 batters.
Folmar said, “Mills just pounded the strike zone. He got into trouble in one inning, but he worked his way out of it.”
SOFTBALL
Chambersburg 13, Mifflin County 0: The Trojans scored 4 runs in 3 separate innings to roll over the Huskies in a Mid Penn Commonwealth game Thursday afrernoon in Lewistown.
Chambersburg (4-1, 3-1 MPC) scored 4 runs in the first, third and fourth innings and closed out the game in the fifth.
Kylee Perry had a big day at the plate, going 3-for-4 and driving in 3 runs. Ashley Mitchell was 2-for-2 and also knocked in 3 runs and Erissa Varner joined the group with 3 RBIs. Addy Gsell and Kendall Flory also contributed 2 hits a piece, with Gsell driving in a pair of runs.
“Our pitchers did a nice job of continuing to pound the strike zone and allowing the defense to do their thing,” Chambersburg coach Chris Skultety said. “Ashley Mitchell hit the ball well and Kylee Perry is finding her groove coming off an offseason injury.”
Issie Slimmer pitched the first 3 innings, giving up 3 hits and 1 walk, while Sanay Jones came in for 2 innings of work, with 1 hit and 4 strikeouts. Between the two pitchers, they totaled 72 pitches and 48 were strikes.
Skultety said, “You never know what you’re going to get after a long bus ride, but the girls came ready to play and started off well. We’re looking forward to some home games next week after being on the road for four of our last five games.”
BOYS LACROSSE
Chambersburg 16, Cedar Cliff 2: The Trojans overcame an injury to a player in warmups to blow out the Colts in a Mid Penn Commonwealth game at Trojan Stadium on Thursday evening.
“We had an injury that required an ambulance and it gave us a bit of a scare (the player is now fine),” Chambersburg coach Joe Wilmot said. “I think our minds were understandably on that at the start of the gameand we led only 3-0 after one quarter.
“Then we rallied in the second and went ahead 9-0 before leading at the half, 10-1.”
Blake Dupont and Ryan Cosey each scored 5 times and added an assist to lead Chambersburg (4-3, 4-3 MPC). Braylen Davis had 3 goals and an assist.
Also for the Trojans, Eli Herbert and Parker Watkins each had a goal and an assist, Matt Tucker scored on goal and Blake Hitchens, Brayden Sprow and Hudson Sites each tallied 1 assist. Goalie Kellen Sanders made 4 saves.
GIRLS LACROSSE
Cedar Cliff 13, Chambersburg 11: The Trojans lost a tough, back-and-forth game to the Colts in a Mid Penn Commonwealth contest on Thursday afternoon on the road.
“It was close the whole game,” Chambersburg coach Shane Henry said. “I’ looking forward to playing them on turf and not in the rain. Unfortunately, we had to play down two players due to yellow cards, but I was proud of how the team responded to that type of adversity.”
Brynn Sekel and Reagan Barrett each scored 4 goals for the Trojans (4-3, 4-3 MPC). Sekel added an assist, 4 groundballs and 8 draw controls, while Barrett had 2 caused turnovers.
Savannah White, Jordyn Sprankle and Adele Henry each scored one goal, while coach Henry cited Mollie Yardley-Gontz for playing good defense (4 caused turnovers).
