Chbg. roundup: Baseball is now 4-0; girls lax wins at buzzer

BASEBALL
Chambersburg 7, Cumberland Valley 0: The Trojans scored all of their runs in the first 2 innings, then Hayden Lyons did the rest in a Mid Penn Commonwealth win over the Eagles on Monday afternoon at Greene Township Park.

Hayden LyonsLyons’ first varsity start was a gem — he went all 7 innings, allowed only a leadoff third-inning single to CV’s Liam George, walked 3 and struck out 3. He threw strikes on 45 of his 80 pitches.

Trojan coach Scott Folmar said, “Hayden was out last year with an injury, so it was a great surprise today. He was very effective — he got in some three-ball counts but made them put the ball in play. And our defense was very, very good again today. We’ve been consistent on defense.”

Chambersburg, now 4-0 (2-0 MPC), struck for 2 runs in the bottom of the first when Ryne Mills reached on an error and Brady Truett crushed a home run to left field for a rare homer at GTP.

“I wasn’t sure it was going to make it, because the wind was blowing across, as usual,” Folmar said. “And it was right down the line. He put a good swing on it.”

In the second inning, Aiden Appleby led off with a double and raced home on a base hit by Konner McMullen. After a walk to Matt Murphy, Mills doubled to center to plate the fourth run, followed by an RBI single from Aaron Vasquez. With two outs, Ceagan Truett produced a base hit that scored two runs and made it 7-0.

“The only bad thing was in the fourth, fifth and sixth innings, we had two runners on base with less than two outs and didn’t score,” Folmar said. “We could have put it away earlier. But we’ll still take it.”

Brady Truett, Appleby and McMullen each had a pair of hits.

GIRLS LACROSSE
Chambersburg 9, Carlisle 8: Adele Henry would not be denied on the final play of the game and her buzzer-beating goal gave the Trojans a comeback victory over the Thundering Herd in a Mid Penn Commonwealth victory on the road Monday evening.

Brooke Mickey

With the score tied 8-8 and time running out, Henry took a pass in front of Carlisle’s goal. She made about 4 jukes to try to find some room against multiple Herd defenders, finally found a small crease and her shot, which took one high bounce, nestled in the net just as the horn sounded.

Trojan coach Shane Henry said, “We came out kind of flat tonight, but turned it around when we needed to. In the fourth period, we just put in the work, but we need to start faster.

“We aren’t winning in the circle and we made some changes in the fourth and it worked. This team is scrappy and has the ability to put quick points up when they need to.”

Brynn Sekel scored 3 goals for Chambersburg (4-2, 4-2 MPC) and added 2 assists, 2 caused turnovers, 2 groundballs and 2 draw controls.  Reagan Barrett had 3 goals, an assist and 2 groundballs. Henry had a pair of goals and 2 assists and Callie Yardley-Gontz added a goal and an assist.

Coach Henry said, “I thought Brooke Mickey played a complete game on defense. She really pressured the ball well and got the defense communicating.”

Blake Dupont

BOYS LACROSSE
Carlisle 21, Chambersburg 11: The Trojans could not find much success at faceoffs against the Thundering Herd (Carlisle got possession on 31 of 35 aceoffs), which made it tough to compete in a Mid Penn Commonwealth game at Trojan Stadium on Monday night.

Ryan Cosey scored 4 goals for Chambersburg (3-3, 3-3 MPC), and the fourth one put him at 200 career points — the first player in the program’s history to reach that total.

Matt Tucker added 3 goals and 2 assists, Braylen Davis scored twice and had an assist, Blake Dupont and Parker Watkins each tallied one goal, Tavian Ferguson contributed 2 assists and and goalie Kellen Sanders had 1 assist and 9 saves.

Seth Walter

Also in singles, the Trojans’ Eli Keeler fell 6-0, 6-0 and Micah Detweiler was defeated 6-1, 6-1. The No. 1 doubles team of Caden Brenize and Drew Staley dropped a 6-1, 6-0 match.
