LEWISBURG — The Chambersburg boys swim team will be coming home with a great sense of accomplishment.
The Trojans outswam their seeds up and down the lineup and outscored their projected final score by 50 points. And that ended up with Chambersburg’s best finish ever — fourth place — at the PIAA Class 3A Championships, which concluded Thursday at Bucknell University.
“The team did something really special this week,” Trojan coach Chad White said. “They started off really strong on the first day and just kept the momentum going, which translated into the best team finish in the history of out program.”
Here’s a list of things the the squadron of five Trojans pulled off:
— In every event it entered, Chambersburg was able to qualify for the A or B final (top 16).
— The Trojans set 3 school records.
— They scored 50 more points than their seeds had them finishing.
— The team brought home a truckload of 12 PIAA medals.
White said, “The boys work so hard and it’s great to see that hard work pay off. Their club coach (and Trojan assistant) Anthony Addlesberger came up with an amazing game plan for this meet and it worked perfectly.”
Thursday began with senior Alex Kaczmark placing 8th in the 100 freestyle, with a time of 45.77. That is a school record.
Next came the 500 free race and Chambersburg had two placewinners, both juniors, Cullen McGraw and Ethan White. McGraw qualified in the prelims as the 6th seed and White was 13th. In the final, McGraw swam a time of 4:32.65 to secure 4th, while White came in 12th in 4:38.59.
Coach White said, “Cullen had a huge drop today in the 500, swimming a smart, gritty race, and had his personal best. That was also Ethan’s best time and he improved a bunch from the prelims.”
The last individual race was the 100 backstroke, and senior Cristian Pong posted a time of 51.69 to place 11th.
White said, “Alex and Cristian ended their senior seasons on an amazing note. Both boys have been integral to the success of the team these past few years. They have led us to new heights and will be missed dearly.”
The finale was the 400 freestyle relay and the Trojans finished with a bang. The team of Kaczmark, White, Pong and junior Amir Tasker sped to a school record mark of 3:05.56 to claim third place.
“The 400 relay team put on a show,” White said. “It was a third-place finish, set a school record, and had monster splits all around. Especially Amir (the anchor), who reeled in North Allegheny and held off Cumberland Valley.”
Perennial powerhouse North Alleghany won the team title with 227 points, followed by La Salle College (190) and Upper St. Clair (144). Chambersburg scored 139 points.
In the Class 3A girls competition on Thursday, Chambersburg freshman Calla Hoffman raced in the prelims for the 100 backstroke. She finished 23rd, which did not qualify her for the finals.
