G-A roundup: 2 big runs enable Blue Devils to out-gun Big Spring

BOYS BASKETBALL
Greencastle-Antrim 70, Big Spring 54: The Blue Devils put together a pair of big-time damaging runs to subdue the Bulldogs in a non-league game Monday night at home.

Greencastle (15-4) led 19-15 after one period, and then scored the first 10 points of the second quarter and led 35-27 by halftime. G-A then blew Big Spring (11-8) out in the third quarter, outscoring them 16-2, with the Bulldogs’ lone points coming with 3 seconds left.

“The defense did some nice things that we had worked on and executed well,” Blue Devil coach Todd Stephens said. “We took care of the basketball against their 2-3 zone, moved the ball and got their zone to shift and then the ball was going in tonight.”

Alex Albright popped in a trio of 3-pointers in the first period and had 11 points in the frame. He had a pair of threes in the 16-0 run in the third quarter and finished with six 3-pointers and 24 points.

Landen Swain scored 8 of his 11 points in the 10-0 second-period run by Greencastle. Cooper Green was the recipient of several good feeds from Dez Holman and tallied 12 points. Bryce Davidson also scored 10 points and the 5-foot-8 Holman grabbed 10 rebounds.

Stephens said, “Dez really hit the boards tonight. He was boxing out well and was pretty scrappy.”

Big Spring’s Landon Sallie, a 6-2 sophomore guard, came in averaging 29.7 points. Good defense by Albright and others held him to 11 points through three quarters, although he did put in 11 in the final 8 minutes to finish with 22.

“Have to give a shoutout to Alex tonight,” Stephens said. “It was senior night (he is the team’s only senior) and not only did he score 24, but he did a really good job on Sallie for most of the game. That kid is smooth and can really shoot.”

GIRLS BASKETBALL
York Suburban 60, Greencastle-Antrim 20: The Trojans, the top-ranked team in District 3 Class 5A, showed the Blue Devils why Monday night, taking a 40-point victory in York in a non-league tilt.

Suburban, a two-time defending district champion, 19-2, while Greencastle drops to 11-9.

“They’re No. 1 for a reason,” G-A coach Scott McKeever said. “They play a tough man-to-man defense and made it hard for us to get any continuity on offense. They used constant screens and movement to get good looks and create mismatches.”

Ellie Bigler scored 7 points for the Blue Devils, while Kiersten Swain and Sophie Fries scored 6 each.
