G-A roundup: Blue Devil girls wrestlers lose tight match

GIRLS WRESTLING
Biglerville 33, Greencastle-Antrim 30: The Canners won the only close bout of the evening and took a narrow non-league win over the Blue Devils in a home match on Thursday.

At 136, after a scoreless first period, G-A’s Brandy Trail was on top and rode Evelyn Ramirez-Hernandez for the the entire period. In the third, Trail gained an escape, but Ramirez-Hernandez scored a takedown to lead 3-1. Another escape by Trail brought her to just one point short.

For Greencastle (4-11), Aniuta Pavlii notched a pin a 106, Kathryn Bream came through at 124 with a fall and Anna Booze followed at 130 with another pin. Riley Martin and Hannah Vazquez both picked up forfeit wins for the Blue Devils.

G-A coach Drew Allshouse said, “I thought we wrestled well. We put ourselves in position and just came up a bit short. We’ve been off for a while, so I’m very happy with how the girls came out and wrestled hard.”

Big Spring 51, Greencastle-Antrim 17: The Blue Devils ran into division leader Big Spring and suffered a Mid Penn Colonial defeat on Thursday night in Newville.

The Bulldogs (13-4, 6-0 MPC) took 3 forfeits and scored 4 pins.

For Greencastle (10-6, 1-3 MPC), Ben Jansen won a close bout at 215, edging Judd Cleland 1-0. A second period escape was the only scoring, and Jansen rode Cleland the entire final period.

At 139, Silas Robertson scored three takedowns to the Bulldogs’ Spencer Osbaugh’s one and emerged with a 9-7 decision.

Landon Hinkle, trailing 10-9 to Big Spring’s Parker Gibson, won by pin at 172 in 3:25. Kevin Hoffpauer racked up a technical fall at 121.

Assistant coach Drew Allshouse said, “Despite being a bit short-handed, the team fought hard and some kids got some varsity experience. We’re a young team and are continuing to grow every match.”
