By Jeff Richards

BOYS BASKETBALL

McConnellsburg 58, Mountain Ridge 46.  The Spartans hosted the Mountain Ridge (Frostburg, MD) Miners for the first time on January 7th in a physical non-conference matchup, taking control in the first quarter and maintaining a double-digit lead at the half and after.  The Spartans’ solid defense led to 23 Miner turnovers and 19 fouls, resulting in a 12-point win.

In the first quarter, Spartan’s Hoyt Glenn scored 11 of the team’s 13 points to set an early lead.  The Spartans (9-0, 2-0 ICC-S) came out ahead in quarters two and three, widening the lead by another seven points.  The Spartans opened the lead to 15 at the third quarter’s end with two quick buckets from Glenn and Jace Fletcher.  Although the Miners had a stronger showing in the final quarter, outscoring the Spartans 16-13, they were unable to make up the 12-point deficit.  Coach Josh Lowery noted that the games were “very good competition for both varsity and JV”.

McConnellsburg extended their winning streak to nine games with another big performance from Glenn with a double-double posting 32 season-high points and 10 rebounds, shooting 12-19 (63%) from the field and 4-5 from the free throw line.  Brayden Ramsey added nine points, with Jake Hann and Fletcher adding seven each.

Mountain Ridge scoring was led by Kris Washington with 15 points and John Delaney with 10.

GIRLS BASKETBALL

McConnellsburg 41 Everett 53.  The Spartans were outmatched by the host Everett Lady Warriors in an ICC game on January 8th.  The Warriors put up an 18-point lead by halftime that allowed them to close out the game with a 12-point win.  They controlled the tempo early on, capitalizing on unforced errors to convert to points and defensively hold the Spartans to single digit scoring in the first half.

The Spartans (7-5, 1-1 ICC-S) found themselves down 13-4 after one quarter and then were outscored 18-9 in the second to head into the half with a 31-13 deficit.  Using the entire team repertoire, the Spartans did outscore the Warriors in the third and fourth quarters and narrow the gap, but their efforts weren’t enough to overcome the early deficit.

Serenity Rengifo and Alyvia Newman each added eight points to lead the Spartans, while Genesis Clevenger added seven.

The Warriors (8-1, 2-0 ICC-S) were led by Jade Cooledge with 17 points and Emma Ritchey with 16.
