Trojans hold off Herd in defensive struggle, 49-37

CHAMBERSBURG — If you were looking for a basketball game with smooth operating offense and good shooting, CASHS Field House was not the place to be Friday night.

Chambersburg and Carlisle met in a Mid Penn Commonwealth tussle and defense was the name of the game. The Trojans held the Thundering Herd to just 26% shooting (10-for-38) and made 20 of 23 free throws to produce a 49-37 victory.

Malachi Duhaney

The shooting wasn’t much better for Chambersburg (7-4, 4-3 MPC), which made 14 of 44 (32%). Let’s just say there were plenty of rebounds to go around and Chambersburg’s height advantage played a big role.

Malachi Duhaney grabbed 12 boards, including 7 offensive rebounds, and added 13 points.

“Both teams were competing at a high level on defense,” Trojan coach Shawn Shreffler said. “It was very physical inside the paint, but that’s the way our league is. I thought Malachi, Colton and Landon (Buhrman) were crashing the boards well.”

Chambersburg went on a 7-0 run that covered the end of the first quarter and the beginning of the second, a run that ended with a dunk by Grayson Kegerreis, to take a 15-6 lead. Carlisle whittled the lead down to three (18-15), but never got closer than six after that.

The Herd (2-10, 0-7 MPC) is still waiting for their first division victory, but they definitely played a scrappy game.

Shreffler said, “Carlisle has been in every single game they’ve played. Now, after seeing them play, I can see why. They play really, really hard, they have good athletes, and they compete. They made it hard to get into any kind of flow.”

Colton Cornwell led Chambersburg with 18 points and played a good game against Carlisle’s press.

“Colton had a tough matchup against their No. 5 (Isaiah ream),” Shreffler said. “That kid’s got a great motor. Colton got to the rim and he got to the line because he was aggressive. Malachi was tremendous on the boards and Grayson helped out against the pressure.

“Having now played everybody in the league now, I’ll tell you — this league is better than I expected it to be. Although I shouldn’t be surprised by that.”
