G-A roundup: Girls, boys hoops defeat Gettysburg

GIRLS BASKETBALL

“Sometimes, like the Wizard of Oz goes, there is no place like home,” G-A coach Scott McKeever. “This was only our second home game in the first 11 games.”

The first period saw some torrid shooting, with the teams combining for eight 3-pointers, and G-A led by 4. But the Blue Devils (4-7, 2-4 MPC) outscored their foes 18-3 in the second to take a big lead at the half (41-22).

For the game, Greencastle held a 50-22 advantage in rebounds. Four players reached double figures in scoring — Sophie Fries (14), Ellie Bigler (12), Alannah Coleman (11, a career high) and Callie Izer (10).

McKeever said, “The game was very up-tempo from the tip to the end, with a lot of possessions. We did a good job of taking care of the ball against their full-court press, which led to some easy baskets. I was proud that our girls could match their pace and energy for 32 minutes.”

In other stats, Fries grabbed 20 rebounds, Bigler had 13 and Izer 10, and Izer had 5 assists.

For Gettysburg (6-6, 2-4 MPC), Bailey Irvin scored 15 points.

BOYS BASKETBALL
Greencastle-Antrim 46, Gettysburg 45: In a rollercoaster of a game, the Blue Devils came home with a one-point Mid Penn Colonial victory over the Warriors on the road Tuesday night, getting the winning points on a drive down the lane and layup by Dez Holman.

Greencastle (8-3, 6-0 MPC) broke out to a 20-7 lead at the end of one quarter. But over the next two quarters, Gettysburg (3-8, 1-5 MPC) outscored G-A 27-9, holding Greencastle to just 2 points in the third, a basket by Cooper Green.

“We started out hot, but then we ran into a stretch where it wouldn’t go in,” Blue Devil coach Todd Stephens said. “We were getting good shots, so I told them to just stick with it.”

The Blue Devils rallied in the fourth, outscoring the Warriors 17-9 to take the win and set up a Colonial showdown  at home on Friday vs. East Pennsboro for the division lead.

Stephens said, “We gutted this one out and we made some free throws late. After Dez’s basket, there was still some time left and they had several chances. On one shot, we couldn’t get the rebound, and on another it went out on us. They get a shot off at the end, but we defended it pretty well.”

Alex Albright knocked down four 3-pointers and led Greencastle with 16 points. Green scored 14 and Holman contributed 11.

For Gettysburg, Charlie Shull put up 16 points.
