Gettysburg 53, Chambersburg 15: The defending District 3 team champion Warriors showed that they are going to be a powerful force again this season after crushing the Trojans in a Mid Penn Commonwealth match Thursday night in Gettysburg.

Chambersburg (1-1, 0-1 MPC) managed only 3 wins, while the Warriors (1-0, 1-0 MPC) racked up 7 pins and 2 major decisions.

Hunter Johnson got the Trojans started with a 10-3 decision at 107 pounds over Luas Ridgley. Isaac Brambley, at 127, scored a pin over Giovanni Matias-Ortiz to bring the score to 11-9 in the Warriors’ favor.

But the next Chambersburg win did not come until Jaccob Stoner’s pin in 1:20 over Reid Whittmoyer.

“We have to improve and get tougher,” Trojan coach Craig Hight said. “We didn’t wrestle confidently and it showed. Gettysburg has a really good team and is well-coached, but some of us lost before we stepped on the mat.

“We let them control the ties and push us around. We can’t put ourselves in a position to win if we don’t improve in the hand fights.”

GIRLS BASKETBALL
Cumberland Valley 56, Chambersburg 21: A lopsided second quarter gave the Eagles a big advantage and defeated the Trojans in a Mid Penn Commonwealth game at CV on Thursday night.

Already ahead 11-6 after one period, Cumberland Valley (3-0, 2-0 MPC) poured it on in the second, outscoring Chambersburg 23-4 to grab a 34-10 lead by halftime.

“Not much to say,” Trojan coach Jamiur King said. “They are just as good as advertised and the team is clicking on all cylinders.

“We showed spurts of good basketball and despite the overall score, we defended solidly on some possessions.”

Maddie Mills led Chambersburg (1-3, 0-2 MPC) with 10 points, Tori Price scored 6 and Ayla Whiteley added 5.

For the Eagles, Peyton Basemore led with 11 points.
