Chbg. roundup: Tough 2nd half lifts Trojan boys to title

BOYS BASKETBALL
Chambersburg 52, York Suburban 38: The Trojans played a strong defensive game, especially in the second half, to earn a win over the hosts in the championship game of the York Suburban Tip-Off Tournament on Saturday night.

Colton Cornwell

The game was tied 22-22 at halftime, but Chambersburg limited Suburban to just 16 points in the second half, including only 5 in the fourth period.

“What a tough and gutsy win by our guys,” Trojan coach Shawn Shreffler said. “We got smacked around early, but continued to fight and found a way to be tied at halftime. In the second half, we did a much better job of matching the physicality.

“We also started to share the ball more, which led to better looks offensively. Josh Rudy’s defense on their leading scorer (Kane Stryn, 7 points) was key as well — he shut him out in the second half.”

The Trojans trailed early in the game until a 3-point play by Landon Buhrman tied the game at 16. Two steals and baskets by Colton Cornwell and Grayson Kegerreis made it 22-18. With 4 seconds left in the third, a layup by Cornwell, assisted by Kegerreis, made it 39-33.

In the fourth, a 3-pointer by Kegerreis gave Chambersburg (2-0) a 42-36 lead. Malachi Duhaney drove for a bucket, then two layups by Kegerreis made it 48-38 with 1:45 left, and the Trojans were 4-for-5 at the foul line to wrap up the game.

Shreffler said, “This game will really help us grow, because (York Suburban) is an excellent team that was playing at home. Things didn’t all go well  for us, but we found a way. I’m really proud of our guys, and the energy from our bench was amazing.”

Cornwell and Kegerreis each tallied 15 points and Buhrman added 12. Silas Leonard led Suburban (1-1) with 10 points.

GIRLS BASKETBALL
Chambersburg 43, Hanover 25: The Trojans held the Nighthawks to 7 points or fewer in each quarter and captured the third-place game at the Northern York Tip-Off Tournament on Saturday evening.

Claire Onomastico

Chambersburg (1-1) led 19-11 at halftime and then outscored Hanover 24-14 in the second half.

Trojan coach Jamiur King said, “It’s early in the season and we’ve been hit by injuries and sickness, so to leave this tournament with a win is definitely progress over perfection.”

Claire Onomastico scored 12 points and Maddie Mills posted 8 to lead Chambersburg, which suffered through a 7-for-19 game at the foul line. Tori Price added 7 points and Sophie Woy had 6.

“Having over half of our points come from out underclassmen is very beneficial,” King said. “Freshman Claire Onomastico with 12 and junior Sophie Woy scoring 6, and both of them coming off the bench, gave us a much-needed spark.”
