Quick start leads Trojans over Indians in wrestling, 28-27

CHAMBERSBURG — If there was any concern for new Chambersburg boys wrestling coach Craig Hight — facing his alma mater in his first dual meet as the head man — it was quickly wiped out.

In a non-league season opener Thursday night at CASHS Field House, the Trojans scored the first 30 points of the match and cruised to a 48-27 victory over the Indians.

“It was business as usual, just at a different level,” said Hight, was moved up from his spot as the boys middle school coach after Matt Mentzer resigned. “I’ve had most of these kids before, so the philosophy is the same. Wins are nice, but it’s about growth and improvement — if you can do that then the wins will take care of themselves.”

After Hunter Johnson took a forfeit win at 107, Chambersburg ripped off 4 straight pins. Aiden Yarnell (114 in 2:38), Cody Seabolt (121 in 0:24), Isaac Brambley (127 in 0:32) and Ethan Paszkowski (133 in 1:26) piled up the points to make it 30-0.

“Ethan wrestled well; he was stepping in for a guy who was out with an injury,” Hight said. “We have three starters out right now.”

The most competitive bout of the evening came at 215 pounds, where Chambersburg freshman Deakon Snavely took on Anthony Ausherman, who was a District 3 runner-up and state qualifier last year. The match was tied 3-3 after two physical periods.

Snavely gave Ausherman an escape to open the third, but it was Ausherman who got the go-ahead takedown. Then, after Snavely escaped, Ausherman caught Snavely with another takedown, this time to his back, and scored a fall in 5:35.

“Deakon held his own,” Hight said. “We just need to get him to create angles on his feet. He’s a big, strong kid and for his first varsity match against a returning state qualifier, he did well. That was a tough task.”

Chambersburg also received pins from Justin Deneen at 145, Jaccob Stoner at 189 and Frank Barrientos at 285.

The meat of the Indians’ lineup did pretty well. Steven Howard (139), Colton Biser (152) and Brady Myers (172) each racked up points with technical falls, getting a lot of points on tilts. Wyatt Lowans also scored a fall at 160.
