Shippensburg gets 500th all time win in rout of Gettysburg

The Shippensburg Greyhounds picked up a 47-12 win over the Gettysburg Warriors on Friday, which was the program’s 500th career win.  The win also kept the Hounds undefeated in the division, 6-0, and their overall record to 6-1.

The Greyhounds used a strong running game, 54 rushes for 367 yards and six touchdowns rushing, enroute to the win.  Mark Carothers Jr. had a career high 168 rushing and three TDs, Damien Horan added 108 and two scores, and Mike Severe had the other rushing score.

The Hounds opened the game with a 10-play 63 63-yard drive and 5:41 of game time.  Gettysburg answered with a quick three-play drive highlighted by the Grant Johnson 54-yard dart to Julius Warren.  Drake Eby’s 42 punt return pushed the lead to 13-6 after one.

Gettysburg again had an answer with a five-play 47-yard drive capped by another strike from Johnson to Trevor Cunningham.  Shippensburg answered with the next three scores in the quarter.  Horan had touchdown runs of 59 (untouched) and 19, with Carothers Jr. adding the last, a two-yard plunge.  After the score, the Hounds were hit with a 15-yard unsportsmanlike penalty, and Gettysburg took advantage on the kickoff.  Shippensburg kicking from their own 25, the Warriors returned the kick 50 yards to the Hounds’ 24.  Ship’s D came up big, forcing four incomplete passes to get it to half as they had excellent coverage downfield.

Shippensburg iced the game with two scores in the fourth.  After forcing a punt from the visitors, the Hounds took over at their own 1 with a little over 7 minutes left in the third.  Shippensburg went 99 yards in 18 plays, running out the third quarter clock and taking 2:29 off the clock in the fourth.  Carothers Jr. capped that drive with his third score.

Up next for the Hounds is a showdown with now a two-loss division foe in Red Land on the road.
