McConnellsburg Bounce Back and Defeat Windber

GIRLS SOCCER: McConnellsburg 2, Windber 1.  The McConnellsburg Lady Spartans (10-2, 7-1 ICC-S) hosted the Windber Lady Rambler in an ICC rematch on September 30th reversing their previous loss with a win at home.

First half:  with under eight minutes remaining in waning daylight, Windber striker Heather Carney scored an unassisted breakaway short-range goal on Spartan keeper Kya Washabaugh to record the only goal of the half.  Second half: under the lights, 21 minutes in, the Spartans took a free kick beyond mid-field and striker Gemma Gordon got control and broke past the Rambler defender and responded from six yards out to score and tie the game at one each.  The Spartans took the lead after 29 minutes when Serenity Rengifo launched a high shot into the upper net over the outstretched arms of the Rambler’s goalkeeper.  Game control and shots-on-goal wise, the Spartans dominated throughout, shooting 14 to 1 in the first half and 13 to 1 in the second.

Up next, the Lady Spartans travel to Rockwood for their second conference game at 4 p.m. Thursday the 2nd.  The first match at home the Spartans shut out the Rockets, 5-0.
