The Shippensburg Greyhounds defeated Lower Dauphin Thursday night, 23-20, at Hershey Park Stadium for their fifth consecutive win and fourth win of seven points or less.
The game was back and forth; the Greyhounds led at the end of the first quarter, 3-0, on a 31-yard field goal from Seth Taylor.
Lower Dauphin took a 6-3 lead with 5:54 remaining in the second quarter on a 3-yard run from Hunter Stohm to give the Falcons a 6-3 lead. The extra point failed.
Shippensburg regained the lead with 2:34 remaining in the half when Noah Garvin recovered a Falcons fumble and took it 12 yards for the touchdown to give the Greyhounds a 9-6 lead, the extra point attempt was blocked.
Lower Dauphin answered with a 32-yard touchdown pass from Braiden Heckard to Cohen Pollock; the kick was good, and Lower Dauphin led at the half, 13-9.
The third quarter remained scoreless until 1:13 remained, when Braiden Carroll threw a 21-yard TD strike to Jayden Hernandez, and the Greyhounds converted the extra point for a 16-13 lead.
Lower Dauphin took the lead back with just over eight minutes remaining on QB Pollock’s 12-yard run, the kick was good, and the Falcons had a 20-16 lead.
The Greyhounds took the lead for good four minutes later on Mark Caorthers, Jr.’s 12-yard run, and Taylor’s kick was good to give the Greyhounds a 23-20 lead.
Lower Dauphin was not done as they drove to the Greyhounds’ 29-yard line. With seconds remaining, Connor Kreiser attempted a 46-yard field goal that bounced off the right goal post and gave Shippensburg a 23-20 victory.
Mark Carothers, Jr, rushed 22 times for 100 yards for the Greyhounds. Braiden Carroll was 6 for 7 with 82 yards passing for the Greyhounds
For Lower Dauphin, Braeden Heckard was 9-17 for 99 yards, and Hunter Strohm led the Falcons’ rushing attack with 74 yards on 21 carries.
Shippensburg will host Gettysburg on Friday, October 3, at 7:00 p.m. Mid Penn Broadcasting will live stream the game beginning at 6:40 p.m.
