BOYS SOCCER
Chambersburg 2, Mechanicsburg 1: The Trojans picked up a very big win on the road Monday night, edging the Wildcats in a Mid Penn Commonwealth tussle.
“That was big for us; we knew we needed to win to stay in the race for first place in the Commonwealth,” Chambersburg coach Corey Grove said. “Mechanicsburg (7-3-2) is an excellent team.”
The Trojans (6-1-4, 4-1-2 MPC) won the game thanks to a great start, scoring both goals within the first 10 minutes of the game. Nate Folk scored on a pass from Noah Mulewich, and Cardson Ymonnice hit the back of the net from Theo Deinboeck.
Grove said, “Mulewich played another fantastic game and out back line did what they needed to do to see the game out. (Goalkeeper) Tyson Shanholtz (4 saves) made a great save in the first half to keep us ahead.”
Chambersburg, which had a penalty kick saved in the second half, led in shots, 11-9, but the Wildcats led in corner kicks (7-3).
GIRLS SOCCER
Mechanicsburg 1, Chambersburg 0: The Trojans put up quite a battle against the unbeaten Wildcats, falling 1-0 at Trojan Stadium on Monday night in a Mid Penn Commonwealth game.
A goal in the second minute of the second half — a shot from about 25 yards out — lifted Mechanicsburg (9-0-1), which is ranked No. 1 in Class 6A in District 3, to the win.
“We set up to frustrate them and counterattack,” Chambersburg coach Paul Unruh said. “The plan was effective in the first half and we were ready to deploy the same tactics in the second half. Unfortunately, they scored. We hung in the rest of the game, and nearly scored an equalizer.
“Despite the result, our performance was that of focus and determination. I’m proud of the fight the girls showed. Moriah Martin put in a monstrous shift in the back line, as did the entire team behind the ball.”
Chambersburg is 5-4-1 (3-3-1 MPC).
GIRLS TENNIS
Chambersburg 5, Central Dauphin East 0: The Trojans clawed their way back to .500 by trouncing the Panthers in a non-league match Monday afternoon in Colonial Park.
Chambersburg (6-6) won by straight sets in all five matches.
Winners in singles included Leah Wadel at No. 1 (6-1, 6-0), Charlie Kalathas at No. 2 (6-1, 6-2) and Olivia Keller at No. 3 (6-4, 6-0) — with the trio giving only 8 total points against.
The doubles teams were just as dominant.
At No. 2, Issie Slimmer and Nina Kuchar took a 6-0, 6-2 win, while at No. 1, Gwen Sefcheck and Gretta Hill rolled to a 6-0, 6-1 victory.
GIRLS VOLLEYBALL
Central Dauphin 3, Chambersburg 0: The Trojans kept it close in all 3 games, but couldn’t break through against the Rams and suffered a Mid Penn Commonwealth loss on Monday in Linglestown.
The scores were 25-20, 25-22 and 25-22 in CD’s favor.
Chambersburg coach Ty Frelin said, “This was a tough one. CD is a good team that doesn’t make many mistakes. They had a solid middle and a solid outside and we had no answers to stop them.”
Kasey Moser was strong at the net with 16 kills for the Trojans (6-5, 2-5 MPC), and Nizaya Hawkins had 8 kills and 2 blocks. Riley Cramer led with 4 blocks.
The leaders in digs were Kaylie Stull (16), Moser (13), Kylee Perry (13) and Ava Zeigler (13). Zeigler added 29 assists, and Perry and Stull had 7 service points each.
“In a lot of ways, we played not to lose,” Frelin said. “We had the lead in each set, but just didn’t make the plays down the stretch. Kasey had a solid match, but it takes everyone.”
