STATE COLLEGE — State College kept its record in football against Chambersburg perfect on Friday night, and did it in a big way.
The Little Lions have defeated the Trojans in each of their 22 meetings and this year’s game at Memorial Stadium looked like many of them, with State College dominating.
“They are a solid football team,” Chambersburg coach Gary Carter said. “Their offense is not that different from what we use, but they just do it very well, while we’re still trying to get our guys more experience with it.”
Little Lions running back D’Antae Sheffey burned the Trojans for 96 yards, but the Syracuse recruit was kept somewhat under wraps.
But the Trojan defense had lots of trouble with SC quarterback Connor Kulka and his band of receivers. Kulka connected on 18 of 27 passes for 268 yards and 4 touchdowns, 3 to wideout Hank Lustig. The scoring plays included throws of 48, 31 and 9 yards to Lustig and 69 to A.J. Fry.
“They hit us with those two big pass plays (the first 2 to Lustig) in the second quarter when they caught us playing man coverage,” Carter said. “It could have been a 10-7 game at halftime (instead of 24-0).”
While the Chambersburg defense never did stop the Little Lions (4-1, 3-1 MPC) — they had zero punts and the only drives they did not score on were a barely missed 52-yard field goal and the final possession — the Trojan offense showed some spark.
Quarterback Cam Green completed 18 of 27 throws for 196 yards (although with 3 interceptions), and several of those successful throws were made with an SC blitzing linebacker right in his face.
Carter said, “Cam will be a good football player. We just have to learn to sustain more drives and do it without the penalties we had. We’re still figuring it out.”
The Trojans (2-3, 1-3 MPC) did manage 231 yards of offense, including 35 yards from RB Malachi Tasker. Cooper Stockslager and Cobe Penick each snared 4 passes.
Starting with poor field position for much of the game, Chambersburg reached the Little Lions’ 40 and 48, both times ended on picks. Early in the fourth period, it reached the SC 8 with a first down after consecutive catches by Penick good for 43 yards.
But on the next play, Green tried to throw into a crowd and SC’s Michael Yourey came down with the interception.
Carter said, “State College has good players, but they are also disciplined — every kid does his job when he’s on the field.
“I do think when I see the film, we’ll find that we did some good things.”
NOTES: The passes to Lustig by Kulka in the second period that blew the game open both came on the first play after Chambersburg gave the ball back, once when it was stopped on fourth-and-1, and once after a punt … Lustig finished with 117 yards through the air and Fry had 100 … Eight different Trojans caught at least 1 pass … A long pass play to Isaiah Tasker was called back for a holding penalty … Chambersburg hosts Cedar Cliff next Friday.
