Chbg. roundup: Soccer teams settle for ties vs. CV

Adan Barrientos

BOYS SOCCER
Chambersburg 2, Cumberland Valley 2: The Trojans came close to beating the Eagles for the second time this year, but had to settle for a tie in a Mid Penn Commonwealth tilt at Trojan Stadium on Thursday night.

Chambersburg coach Corey Grove said, “We came away thinking we deserved a bit more from our performance (out-shot CV 15-6). We did a lot of good things and put ourselves in a position to win … just need to clean up some mistakes and take advantage of our opponents.”

The Trojans (5-1-4, 3-1-2 MPC) scored just before halftime when Adan Barrientos headed in a corner kick taken by Theo Deinboeck, and got the second goal when Anton Winter was fouled in the box and converted a penalty kick.

It was the first time Chambersburg had allowed more than 1 goal this season.

GIRLS SOCCER
Chambersburg 0, Cumberland Valley 0: The offenses took a back seat to the defenses in a Mid Penn Commonwealth clash between the Trojans and Eagles in New Kingstown on Thursday evening.

Ashley Mitchell

“It was a gritty, but not necessarily ugly performance,” Chambersburg coach Paul Unruh said. “Goalkeeper Ashley Mitchell (12 saves) was assertive, aggressive off her line and super assured with her hands, and her calm demeanor spread to the back line.

“We were not content to sit back – we created plenty of chances. In particular, Bree Paetow, Malia Cramer, Kadence Decker and Katy Weller provided the creative spark.”

Chambersburg is 5-3-1 (3-2-1 MPC) and is unbeaten in its last 4 games. The Eagles are 8-1-1.

Unruh said, “Last year at this same point, we played Central Dauphin and CV and went 0-2 with a minus-7 goal differential. This year, we were one win and one draw with a plus-one differential. This team won’t back down to anyone.”

GIRLS VOLLEYBALL
Cumberland Valley 3, Chambersburg 1: The Trojans battled hard, but lost a close one to the Eagles in a Mid Penn Commonwealth clash on the road Thursday night.

Riley Cramer

CV won the first game 25-22, then Chambersburg (5-4, 2-4 MPC) evened it with a 25-21 win. But the Eagles captured the last two sets, 25-19 and 26-24.

Trojan coach Ty Frelin said, “This was a back-and-forth match from the very beginning, with solid play on both sides of the net. Both teams got good touches on the block. Both teams served tough. It was a fun match to be a part of.”

Riley Cramer played well at the net with 6 blocks and 5 kills. Other team leaders included Lexi Poe (12 service points), Kasey Moser (14 kills), Ava Zeigler (30 assists) and Kaylie Stull (32 digs).

Zeigler also had 11 points (2 aces) and 2 blocks; Moser had 9 points (1 ace) and 18 digs, Olivia Shearer had 9 kills and 2 blocks, and Poe added 18 digs.

“I thought Riley Cramer played really well offensively, as did Kaylie Stull defensively,” Frelin said. “Unfortunately, we came out on the losing end.”
