SHIPPENSBURG — Chambersburg’s boys and James Buchanan’s girls both produced good days on Saturday at the District 3 Track & Field Championships, finishing in the top 10 in the team standings
But Jaeda Dockman of Waynesboro was the only area athlete to earn a gold medal at Shippensburg University’s Grove Stadium. Dockman surpassed her previous best jump (5-4) this season by an inch, reaching 5-5 on her final jump at that height to win by that mere inch.
The Trojan boys captured sixth place in the Class 3A team chase.
“We have six boys who qualified for states, so it was a pretty good day,” Chambersburg coach Jim Boyer said.
Blake Mallast led the way by taking third place in both the 100 and the 200. He ran an 11.10 in the 100 and 21.68 in the 200 to qualify for the PIAA Championships in both events.
Luke Mertz was fourth in the pole vault, hitting a height of 13-6, and the 4 x 800 relay team of Kaden Rife, Aiden Alleman, Cole Lehman and Liam Kirkpatrick placed fourth in 8:09.89. Kirkpatrick also advanced to states in the 3200 by placing fifth with a time of 9:25.86.
Jon Dawe also scored for the Trojans, taking eighth in the 300 hurdles in 40.30.
The area’s other top-5 finish was by Ben Williams of Waynesboro in the javelin with a toss of 177-7.
In Class 3A girls, Dockman had the only finish higher than sixth. Greencastle-Antrim’s Jaylynn Schmuck was sixth in the triple jump (36-11.25) and Chambersburg’s Alaina Morris was seventh in the pole vault at 11-6.
Trojan coach Chris Monheim said, “I think every girl we had in the meet today improved upon their seed, and almost all are back again next year.”
The James Buchanan girls finished in a tie for seventh with Oley Valley, each with 46 points.
The Rockets were powered by four third-place efforts. Katelyn Clever was third in the 1600 in 5:22.43 and the 3200 in 12:04.10, Jenna Wible took third in the 400 in 1:01.08 and Ainsley Green was third in the shot put with a heave of 33-11.5.
Also in the top five were Alexis Martin in the javelin, hitting 104-0, and the 4 x 800 relay team of Kaleigh Wiker, Dora Atherton, Kimber Yeager and Addie Cullers, with a time of 10:27.57.
