SOFTBALL
Chambersburg 8, Altoona 3: The Trojans nursed a 4-3 lead into the fourth inning, but 2 runs in that inning and 2 more in the fifth put away a Mid Penn Commonwealth victory for them over the Mountain Lions on Thursday afternoon at Norlo Park.
Sanay Jones started and went 4 innings to get the win, allowing 4 hits, a walk and 2 earned runs. Issie Slimmer threw the final 3 scoreless innings, giving up 2 hits and 1 walk.
Bree Paetow was 2-for-3 with a double and a triple, and scored 3 times. Addison Gsell and Malia Cramer each had a hit and drove in 3 runs each.
After Altoona scored 2 runs in the top of the first, the Trojans (12-4, 9-3 MPC) loaded the bases and Cramer cleared them with a 3-run double. A triple by Paetow and a grounder to short by Gsell made it 4-3 in the second.
Gsell’s 2-run double made it 6-3 in the fourth and 2 more runs scored in the fifth when Erissa Varner plated a pair of runners with a bases-loaded single.
Chambersburg coach Chris Skultety said, “We tried some new things today to let some other girls get their shot. Some of them did well. But the whole team was flat today and our energy just wasn’t there. Our outfield of Varner, Cramer and (Marley) Onomastico was outstanding with some of the catches they made.
“It’s been a long week with all of the travel. So now we’ll rest up and get ready for the last week and a half of the regular season.”

The Trojans scored a run in the second inning after Ceagan Truett led off with a double. Keaton Barclay singled and Truett scored on a fielder’s choice grounder by Brycen Murray.
In the fourth, Barclay walked and advanced to second on a hit by Brady Truett. Tyler Foreman then hit a grounder that Altoona booted, allowing Barclay to score.
