SOFTBALL
Chambersburg 16, Altoona 1: The Trojans made a long trip for a short game, with a 10-run top of the third inning causing the game to end after just 3 innings in a Mid Penn Commonwealth matchup at the Mountain Lions.
“The girls came out and did what they needed to do to secure a quick win,” Chambersburg coach Chris Skultety said. “What I love most about this team is how they cheer and care for one another at all times and continue to want each other to be successful.”
Karley Skultety was 3-for-3 with a double and a pair of RBIs, Bree Paetow was 2-for-3 with 3 runs batted in, and Addison Gsell was 2-for-3 with a pair of doubles and 2 runs driven in.
Kylee Perry smacked a double and drove in 3 runs for the Trojans (10-4, 7-3 MPC) , Erissa Varner knocked in a trio of runs, while Malia Cramer put up a pair of RBIs.
Kori Leedy pitched the first 2 innings for the win, allowing 1 hit and fanning 3, while Sanay Jones had 1 inning with 1 hit and an earned run.
Coach Skultety said, “We’re going to see how mentally tough we are, with another long bus trip play play Mifflin County tomorrow.”
BASEBALL
Altoona 11, Chambersburg 2: The Trojan pitchers allowed 11 hits, walked 14 batters and hit 3 more, keeping traffic on the bases most of the game and suffering a Mid Penn Commonwealth defeat at the hands of the Mountain Lions on Monday afternoon at Greene Township Park.
Chambersburg (4-10, 2-8 MPC) scored 2 runs in the fifth inning to tie the game 2-2, but Altoona plated 4 runs in the sixth and 5 more in the seventh.
“It’s pretty tough to win a game when you give up 17 free passes (14 walks, 3 hit batters),” Trojan coach Scott Folmar said. “Wyatt (Martin) settled in after the first inning and gave us four solid innings. We didn’t do a good job of executing offensively early in the game to chip away at the lead.
“Unfortunately, after we tied the game, we couldn’t find the strike zone and they took full advantage of it.”
In the Chambersburg fifth, leadoff batter Tyler Foreman was hit by a pitch and raced to third on a base hit by Ryne Mills. Martin then hit an RBI single to put runners on first and second. Mills advanced to third on a fly ball by Evan Brown and scored on a wild pitch to tie the game.
But in the final two innings, Chambersburg relievers gave up 2 hits, 9 walks and a pair of hit batters, and the Trojans also made an error.
