McConnellsburg Takes Lead and Never Looks Back In Win Over Rockwood

“Hall Delivers One-Hit One-Run Complete Game”

By Jeff Richards

McConnellsburg, PA.-The Spartans hosted the Rockwood Rockets for a non/cross-conference game on Tuesday.  The Spartans won the last time they faced the Rockets and things went their way again here in five shortened innings. The Spartans were the clear victors by an 11-1 margin over the Rockets snapping their three-game winning streak.

The Spartans jumped out to the lead in the bottom of the first inning after Reese Alexander doubled, scoring two runs (Hoyt Glenn, Ben Sattazahn), and Kohen Hall grounded out, scoring one run (Alexander).

The Spartans scored five runs on three hits in the bottom of the second inning. Glenn drew a walk, scoring one run (Tucker Hedge); Sattazahn was struck by a pitch, driving in a run (Jace Fletcher), Kade Gress was struck by a pitch, driving in a run (Finn Kuhn), and Kohen Hall singled, scoring two runs (Glenn and Sattazahn).

The Rockets got on the board in the fourth inning when a walk scored a run.

In the fifth inning the Spartans singled and forced five walks to get the decisive three runs from Hall, Hedge and Fletcher before reaching the ten-run rule.

Kohen Hall earned the win for the Spartans. The starter allowed one hit and one run over five innings, striking out eight and walking four. He has consistently performed well, giving up no more than one earned run in his last six appearances.

Nathan Show took the loss for Rockwood. The starter went four innings, allowing eight runs (seven earned) on six hits, striking out three and walking three.  Carson Harbaugh pitched two thirds an inning in relief and allowed three runs (all earned) on one hit, striking out none and walking four.

Garrison Hale led the team with one run batted in. Max Trimpy went 1-for-3 at the plate to lead the Rockets in hits.

For the Spartans’ offense, Alexander and Hall each collected two hits and three runs apiece. Alexander went 2-for-3 with three RBI, one run, and one double.  Hall, also solid in the batter’s box, went 2-for-3 with two singles, and those three RBI gave him a new career-game high.

Glenn also contributed mightily to the scoring as he got on base in three of his four plate appearances with two runs, one stolen base, and two RBI. Glenn is becoming a predictor of the Spartans’ success: when he posts at least two runs the team is undefeated.  Glenn led with three walks. Overall, the team had a strong eye at the plate, accumulating seven walks for the game

McConnellsburg always had someone on base and finished the game having posted an OBP of .567. They easily outclassed their opponents in that department as Rockwood only posted an OBP of .333.

The Spartans improved to 7-4 with their third straight home win. Their pitching allowed only 1 run per game on average, contributing to those home victories. This is their fourth game won by ten or more runs this season.
