G-A roundup: Pair of HRs leads softball team over Northern

SOFTBALL
Greencastle-Antrim 8, Northern York 3: A pair of clutch home runs, by Caroline Logsdon and Meadow Gambacurta, lifted the Blue Devils to a huge Mid Penn Colonial victory over the Polar Bears in Dillsburg on Monday afternoon.

Caroline Logsdon

Northern held a 1-0 lead, but Logsdon’s 2-run homer after a single by Zhen Reuter in the third inning gave G-A (8-1 (6-0 MPC) the lead for good.

“Their pitcher (Samantha Magee) has a really good changeup that we were having trouble with,” Greencastle coach Mark DeCarli said. “But she tried to sneak in a fastball on Caroline and she tattooed it. That was a big momentum change.”

In the fifth, the Blue Devils added on with 3 runs. With 1 out, Reuter walked, moved up on 2 wild pitches on scored on a grounder by Logsdon. Gambacurta walked, Kylie Kerns singled and a walk to Kaidyn Zimmerman loaded the bases. An error on a ball hit by Erika Hoover brought in 2 runs.

G-A put up 3 insurance runs in the sixth when Gambacurta unloaded a 3-run homer, her fourth of the season.

Pitcher Kiersten Swain did the rest, holding Northern (7-2, 4-2 MPC) to 6 hits and a walk, with 10 strikeouts. One of Northern’s runs was unearned.

DeCarli said, “Kiersten pitched very well and held them in check. When they got something going in the seventh, Kylie Kerns made a great catch in centerfield.”

BASEBALL
Northern York 2, Greencastle-Antrim 1: The Polar Bears scored a run on a squeeze bunt in the top of the seventh inning to sneak past the Blue Devils in a key Mid Penn Colonial game Monday afternoon at home.

Cam Rakaczewski

“We gave them eight walks in seven innings and that’s just too many,” G-A coach Eric Shaner said. “We did pick off three runners, but that’s giving them too many runners. On their winning run, we defensed that bunt perfectly, but we just couldn’t execute the throw home.”

Greencastle (5-3, 4-2 MPC), which had a 3-game win streak halted, scored its run in the top of the first off Collin McDonald. Andrew Weaver singled, moved to third on a pair of fielder’s choice grounders and scored on a wild pitch.”

The Blue Devils had 6 hits off McDonald. Cam Niland went the first 2 innings for Greencastle and Jaxson Bostick hurled the last 5, absorbing the loss. He had 8 strikeouts, but also 6 walks.

“McDonald’s a sidewinder and we just don’t see him well,” Shaner said. “Cam Rakaczewski hit a two-out triple in the third, but we stranded him. In the sixth, we had runners on second and third, then we struck out and Landon Myers smoked a shot right to their first baseman.”

Elvin Robles was 2-for-3 for G-A. The Polar Bears are 6-3 (5-2 MPC).
