Chambersburg roundup: Softball team romps over Big Spring

SOFTBALL
Chambersburg 10, Big Spring 0: Kori Leedy and Sanay Jones combined on a six-inning one-hit shutout as the Trojans took care of non-league foe Big Spring on Monday afternoon in Newville.

Bailey Summers

Chambersburg (6-2) won its fifth straight contest. The Trojans built a 3-0 lead through 4 innings, then scored 4 in the fifth inning and 4 more in the sixth.

Trojan coach Chris Skultety said, “The girls came focused and ready to play today and we had an incredible pregame warmup. It’s a good way to start a tough stretch of games (Mechanicsburg, Cumberland Valley and Central Dauphin).”

Leedy pitched 5 innings of one-hit ball, giving up a hit a walk and striking out 4. Jones walked one in her relief job.

“Their one hit was on an infield hit that both the first and second baseman went for and nobody covered first,” Skultety said. “Tough way to lose a no-hitter.”

Leadoff batter Bree Paetow was 3-for-3 with a double and a triple, and scored 4 runs. Jones was 2-for-3 with a pair of doubles, and Bailey Summers was 2-for-2 with a double and an RBI.

“Bree continues to set the table, and the bottom of the order (Jones, Erissa Varner and Summers) was clutch today,” Skultety said. “And Ono (Marley Onomastico) smashed the ball and had nothing to show for it.”

Paetow led the game off with a triple and scored on a passed ball. In the third, courtesy runner Varner scored on passed ball and Addison Gsell plated a run on a two-out base hit.

In the fifth, Jones doubled to lead off and Varner produced a bunt single. A walk to Paetow loaded the bases. Three runs scored on consecutive walks to Karley Skultety, Gsell and Malia Cramer. Onomastico then hit a sacrifice fly to make it 7-0.

Jones and Summers led off the sixth with doubles, with Summers getting an RBI. Paetow then doubled to put runners at second and third. Summers and Paetow ended up scoring on a fielder’s choice by Leedy.
