SOFTBALL
Cumberland Valley 7, Chambersburg 5: The Trojans jumped ahead 4-0 in the bottom of the first inning off Eagles’ star pitcher Sydney May, but scored only one more run the rest of the way and CV eventually caught up to take a Mid Penn Commonwealth victory at Norlo Park on Monday afternoon.
“If you get four runs off May like that, you have to win that game,” Chambersburg coach Chris Skultety said. “We had a second-and-third and didn’t score off of that, and we didn’t follow our game plan like we did early. And we dropped several fly balls that would have ended innings before they scored.”
In the bottom of the first, Bree Paetow led off with a double and Karley Skultety walked. A single by Addison Gsell brought in a run, then another scored on a wild pitch. A walk to Marley Onomastico was followed by another run-scoring wild pitch. Then Sanay Jones put down a squeeze bunt to make it 4-0.
But the only other run off of May was a solo home run by Kori Leedy in the second inning.
Leedy did the pitching for the Trojans (1-1, 0-1 MPC) and allowed 6 earned runs on 10 hits and 2 walks, striking out 6.
The Eagles (3-0, 1-0 MPC) clawed back with 2 runs in the second, 2 more in the third and then hit solo home runs in the fourth, fifth and seventh innings, by Janelle Schneider, May and Annika Shearer.
“The wind was blowing out, but they crushed two of them,” Skultety said. “We just gave them too many extra chances. We did some good things early, but we couldn’t get the big hit later in the game. I think May had 9 of her 11 strikeouts down he stretch.”
Chambersburg got 6 hits (2 by Paetow) and drew 3 walks off May. The Trojans host Central Dauphin in another key Commonwealth game on Wednesday.
BASEBALL
Cumberland Valley 8, Chambersburg 7: The Eagles scored 5 runs in the bottom of the first and the Trojans were never able to catch up, dropping a narrow Mid Penn Commonwealth defeat on Monday afternoon in New Kingstown.
Starter Kam Mauriello had trouble locating the strike zone in the first, issuing 5 walks, and allowing 2 hits. Harrison Benedict relieved, but he was nicked for 3 runs in the third inning. Wyatt Martin pitched 3 spotless innings to finish off the game.
“We still had a 4-0 lead in that first with two outs and a man on first … and they scored five runs after that,” Chambersburg coach Scott Folmar said. “If we get out of that, we probably have a different outcome.”
The Trojans (1-2, 0-1 MPC) started the game on fire scoring 4 runs in the top of the first. Ceagan Truett was hit by a pitch and later scored on Evan Brown’s single. Ryne Mills walked and a base hit by Keaton Barclay scored Brown. Martin singled in the third run and Barclay scored on a steal of home.
In the third, Brown singled, stole second and raced home on a hit to center by Mills. Chambersburg got two more in the fifth on a walk, a hit by pitch, a fielder’s choice, another walk, and bases-loaded walks to Martin and Brown.
Folmar said, “We did some good things on offense — had some sac bunts, played some small ball and stole some bases. But we did leave leave the bases loaded twice. We definitely saw some positives.”
Brown and Barclay each had 2 hits for the Trojans. For CV (3-0, 1-0 MPC, Holton Minor drive in 3 runs.
