SPRING GROVE — Chambersburg wrestled 18 bouts at the District 3 Class 3A Wrestling Championships on Friday at Spring Grove and ended up with a 10-8 record.

But the Trojans still have three wrestlers alive in the championship rounds and two more in consolations, and that added up to a tie for fifth place in the team standings with Boiling Springs.

Chambersburg went 5-3 in the first round at Spring Grove H.S., then won three straight matches in the quarterfinal round, before narrowly losing the last two.

Trojan seniors Zach Sherman (127 pounds), Ashton Romberger (139) and Logan Mickey (152) have reached the semifinals, which will be wrestled Saturday morning starting at 10 a.m.

The only other area wrestler in the semifinal round is Waynesboro sophomore Anthony Ausherman. Chambersburg’s Jaccob Stoner (189) and Frank Barrientos (285), as well as ‘Boro’s Jayden Rooney (145) are still alive in the consolation rounds.

The 127-pound bracket had to be redrawn when Gov. Mifflin’s Patrick Steuer, Sherman’s scheduled opponent, had to drop out.

Sherman won 4-0 over Mason Webb of Hershey in the first round using a tight half nelson ride to keep Webb inbounds for much of the bout. In the semifinal, he rolled to a 16-0 technical fall in just 2:34 over Gettysburg’s Blake Haines, getting two takedowns and three sets of back points.

“We heard about the bracket change yesterday,” Sherman said, “but it didn’t really change anything — I knew I’d have to beat some good kids anyway.

“I wanted to get to my offense early — you can’t afford to just sit back here. Besides, it’s my senior year, so it’s go time.”

Romberger scored a quick pin, in 37 seconds, in the first round over Ayden Livelsberger of South Western, then put up an 11-4 decision over Barrett Keiffer of Manheim Central. He fell behind 3-0, but by the end of the first period, Romberger had used an escape, takedown and back points to lead 6-3.

“I’m not cutting much weight this year, and I feel stronger,” Romberger said. “But the biggest difference between last year and this year is have confidence in myself. I was a little nervous (for this tournament) because it’s my senior year, but over time I’ve learned to believe in myself.”

Mickey had a dominant first-round bout, pinning Ryan Poore of Daniel Boone in 3:09. He hit a beautiful inside trip for his first takedown.

In the quarterfinals, he took on Zach Landis of Manheim Twp. He countered a Landis shot with a go-behind for a takedown and led 4-0 after two. And that’s the way it ended after Mickey rode Landis the entire third period.

“I was pretty nervous going into sectionals,” Mickey said, “but I know in the tournaments you have to take it match by match and period by period. It’s easier in a way late in the year because you don’t get slowed down by other things — the mind is the most important thing.”

Stoner took an impressive 8-1 win over Central Dauphin’s Cole Ramberger, then fell 4-3 in a physical bout against Gehret Gentzyel of York Suburban.

A double-leg takedown late in the first gave Gentzler the lead. There were several times one or the other tried a throw, but each time the other rolled out before any points were awarded. Stoner got to within 3-2 after two, and it was 4-2 in the third when Stoner connected on a single and appeared to have a takedown secured, but was ruled out of bounds.

Barrientos scored a first-round pin in 2 minutes, but suffered a 4-1 defeat to Middletown’s Joseph Gassert in the quarters. A first period takedown, on which it appeared Barrientos slipped, was the difference.

Both Stoner and Barrientos came back with wins in the next consolation round.

Waynesboro’s Ausherman rolled to an 11-1 win in the first round, then took a 5-0 victory over Brayden Jumper of Carlisle in the second.

In Saturday’s semifinals, Sherman (33-8) faces Aiden Herndon of Cedar Cliff (33-4); Romberger (32-8) takes on Myles Grossman of Gettysburg (37-5); Mickey (28-12) meets Nathaniel Replogle of Central York (40-6) and Ausherman (27-9) is up against Kevin Oswalt of Exeter Twp. (42-6).

In the team standings, Conestoga Valley leads with 54 points, followed by Wilson, Elco and Gettysburg, and Chambersburg and Boiling Springs with 36.5 each.
