MECHANICSBURG — It has become habit forming.
Despite crowning only one champion, Chambersburg’s wrestlers shared the wealth and the points Saturday at Mechanicsburg and won the team title at the District 3 Section III Tournament.
It is the program’s fifth sectional team championship in the last six years.
The Trojans finished with 1 champion (Ashton Romberger at 139), 3 runners-up, three thirds, two fourths and a fifth and all but two wrestlers scored team points.
Chambersburg coach Matt Mentzer, coaching in his last sectional, said, “It was a solid day of wrestling for the kids. This is the kind of team we’ve had this year — we have depth. The kids take care of themselves, and each guy pulls his weight and good things happen. Even the guys who didn’t place scored points for us.”
The Trojans ended up qualifying 8 to the District 3 Championships on Friday and Saturday at Spring Grove. Shippensburg and James Buchanan each advanced one wrestler to districts.
Romberger continued his good form and fashioned a 6-3 win over Logan Maurer of Cumberland Valley in the final at 139. Romberger has been hot on his feet, and he scored from that position in each of the first two periods.
The second one came after he shot and Maurer flattened him with a sprawl. Romberger (30-8) patiently fought up to his knees, gathered in Maurer’s legs and picked him up before returning him to the mat for three points.
“I’ve done that a few times, and I did it earlier today,” Romberger said. “I just worked my way back up and when I got him up (in the air), I was hoping for back points, but I couldn’t turn him.”
Leading 6-3, he was content to let Maurer ride him in the third, never getting close to getting turned.
“It was a long day of sitting around and I didn’t want to do too much and take a chance,” he said.
Mentzer said, “A lot of coaches have been telling me that they have noticed how much Ashton’s improved since the season started. He’s put the time in, and now he’s getting a reward. That goes for some of the other kids, too.”
Chambersburg’s other finalists were Isaac Brambley at 107, Jaccob Stoner at 189 and Frank Barrientos at 285.
Brambley met Red Land’s Sam Culp, who has only one leg, and couldn’t match his strength or tilts in an 11-2 defeat. Stoner, who blasted the No. 2 seed Rajohn Rodriguez of Harrisburg, 16-0, in just 2:40 in the semifinals, had it happen to him as Tyler Morrison of West Perry took a tech fall, 19-4, in just 1:47. At 285, Cedar Cliff’s Guner Hiller scored a takedown at 1:19 of the first period and rode Barrientos for pretty much the remainder of the bout.
Third-place winners were Logan Mickey at 152 and Zethan Sleighter at 160. Sleighter went 5-1, including 4 pins and a major decision.
Zach Sherman was fourth in perhaps the deepest weight class, 127, and Isaiah Tasker, who was 2-1 in three consecutive 1-1 ties after regulation, was fourth at 172. Cody Seabolt (114) placed 5th.
Mentzer said, “I think this section is by far the best (of the four sections) as far as depth, so for us to win five of the last six titles says a lot about the program.”
James Buchanan’s Finn Corson took third at 145. He scored two pins, then was decked by Ian Longenberger of Boiling Springs in the semifinals, but came back with another pair of falls. Also for the Rockets, Austin Miller was 6th at 215.
Ship’s Wyatt Holderbaum won a 5-3 win via reversal in the consolation semifinals to qualify for districts, but was pinned in the bout for 3rd place. Also for the Greyhounds, Aden Minnich (107) and Brayden Horne (172) placed 6th.
