MECHANICSBURG — Shippensburg’s Olivia Kearns and Waynesboro’s Kenadee Shockey both entered the District 3 Section II girls wrestling tournament with No. 1 seeds.
And they both came through their brackets unscathed to capture championships at Mechanicsburg on Friday.
Kearns, a freshman, was 3-0 with 3 pins at 112 pounds. She defeated Cassidy Carl of Elizabethtown in the final, taking a 6-1 lead with two takedowns before finishing Carl off with a pin in 1:07.
Shockey went 2-0 with a semifinal pin at 190 pounds. In the final, facing Kimberlee Hechler of Cumberland Valley, Shockey ended a scoreless bout with a second-period takedown and then a fall in 2:59 to grab her gold medal.
Kearns, 28-1, and Shockey, 16-2, will compete next in the District 3 Championships at Penn Manor on March 1.
The only other area girls to advance to district was the Maidens’ Annabelle Tracey (15-7), who placed 4th at 142 pounds. The top four in each weight class move on to districts.
