CHAMBERSBURG — Waynesboro had to have a win over Chambersburg on Wednesday afternoon in a makeup non-league girls basketball game to have a shot at qualifying for the District 3 playoffs.

The Maidens were able to secure a 50-32 victory over the Trojans at CASHS Field House, but appear to have fallen just short of the playoffs. Waynesboro (13-9) holds the No. 17 ranking in Class 6A, and the top 16 qualify.

Chambersburg finishes its season with a 4-18 record.

Waynesboro led only 8-6 after one quarter, but made it a 22-10 lead by halftime.

“Maddie (Mills) and Riley (Evans) did a great job of keeping us in it early,” Trojan coach Jamiur King said. “But Waynesboro did a very good job of making our other players score, and we struggled to do that.”

Indeed, Mills tossed in 18 points, including 5 3-pointers, and Evans added 12 (with 9 rebounds). The rest of the team added only 2 more points.

For the season, Mills, a freshman, led the team in scoring with 13.9 points per game, and Evans, a senior, tallied 13.4 points per game.

King said, “We played a lot of games in the past few days and that may have caught up with us. Waynesboro did a great job of making us look for other players to score.”

For the Maidens, Bre McIlquham and Genesis Alvarez each scored 13 points and Marissa Hedin added 9.
