YORK — For the second time this season, Chambersburg took on Gettysburg on a wrestling mat.
And for the second time, the Warriors proved to be the better team.
Saturday afternoon, it just meant a little more, because it was the championship match of the District 3 team tournament at Central York. Gettysburg leaped to a 22-0 lead after four bouts and cruised to a 44-16 verdict, defending the district title it won a year ago.
Chambersburg’s dual meet season is not over yet, however. The Trojans (15-4) will compete in the first round of the PIAA Tournament on Tuesday night against the District 1 champion, Boyertown (21-2), likely at that school’s site. The PIAA will release pairings on Sunday.
The Warriors (19-2) won six of the first seven bouts to roll to a 25-3 lead.
Included in that run were repeats of two bouts that happened back in December, when Gettysburg won 37-23. At 152, Caden Shearer won 5-3 over Logan Mickey, this time the Warrior pinned Mickey. At 172, Chambersburg’s Isaiah Tasker edged Matthew Rebert in sudden victory in the first meeting; this time Rebert rallied from a 6-2 deficit to pin Tasker at 4:40.
That was a nine-point swing the Trojans couldn’t afford against Gettysburg, which is ranked in the top 25 in the state.
Chambersburg coach Matt Mentzer said, “The matches and team points were there for us to win this dual, but we just didn’t get it done.”
Jaccob Stoner put Chambersburg on the board at 189 with a 7-6 win over Keegan McGrew. Stoner was up 7-0 after one period, after he hit a headlock for 7 points, although McGrew did well to not get pinned. McGrew scored 6 points in the second period on a takedown, a 2-point nearfall and a penalty point.
At 285, the Trojans’ Frank Barrientos notched another pin, taking 56 seconds to deck Isaak Whitney, for his 31st win of the season.
Cody Seabolt earned a 6-0 decision at 114 for Chambersburg, but although he tried, he was not able to turn Aiden Black.
Zach Sherman had the Trojans’ other win, a 14-2 major over Blake Haines at 127. Sherman had three takedowns, plus a 4-point nearfall in the win.
Mentzer said, “I am proud of how this group has come together and fought all season long, through injuries and illnesses. The entire coaching staff is so proud of what this team has accomplished.”
Gettysburg also got pins from Reid Grossman at 145, William Yordy at 121 and Isaiah Jackson at 133 (for his 100th career win as a junior), major decisions from Wyatt Sokol (145) and Myles Grossman at 139, and a decision from Mason Rebert at 215.
