McConnellsburg girls take conference loss to Everett

McConnellsburg 33, Everett 56. On Thursday, January 9th, the Lady Spartans hosted the Everett Lady Warriors in a conference game. They faced stiff competition and defense, fell behind mid-first quarter, and never recovered. This loss snapped an eight-game win streak and is the first double-digit defeat since December 3rd, game one of the season.

In the first half of quarter one, the Spartans racked up an eight-point run, holding the Warriors scoreless, but the visitors countered and closed the frame on a 13-1 run, taking a 13-9 lead.  The club held the Spartans to three points in the second, their lowest in many quarters, to end the half ahead 20-12.  Everett continued to pressure the Spartans, take advantage of turnovers, and shoot well to outscore 19-9 and take quarter three, 39-21. In the final frame, Everett outscored 17-12 to close the night and 23 up.

Lucy Brun and Journey Jefferson co-led the Spartans (9-3 overall, 1-1 ICC South) both with 10 points and five rebounds.

Spartans’ scoring: Maggie Mellott 0 2-2 2, Lucy Brun 3 3-6 10, Sydney Buterbaugh 1 1-4 4, Journie Jefferson 3 4-8 10, Brookelynn Gelvin 2 0-1 4, Marin DeShong 1 1-2 3, Totals 10 11-23 33. 3-point shots – 2 (Brun 1, Buterbaugh 1).  FTM% 47.8%.  Spartans shot 10 for 36 (28%) from the field. Spartans’ totals:  rebounds 32, turnovers 17, fouls 16.

Bowser 3 0-0 6, Totals 22 6-120 56.  3-point shots — 6 (Colledge 5, Levy 1).  FTM% 50%. FGM% (2P) 37%, (3P) 50%.  The Warriors shot 22 for 55 (40%) from the field.  Warriors’ totals:  rebounds 28, turnovers 13, fouls 18.
