McConnellsburg 39, Northern Bedford County 37. The McConnellsburg High School Lady Spartans hosted the Northern Bedford County Lady Panthers in a non-conference game Wednesday night and battled to the end to take the win over a persistent foe.
At just over a minute to go, Lady Spartan’s center Maggie Mellott grabbed one of her many defensive rebounds and fired a pass to guard Journie Jefferson streaking down court for a fast break. She was fouled on her layup, went to the free throw line, and sank both shots to open the lead to three, MHS 38-35. Close to the end, the Lady Panthers battled down low on a play and put back a bank shot with 0.2 seconds left to narrow the lead to 39-37. After a Spartans timeout, a backcourt inbounds throw-in to beyond mid-court was enough to run out the clock and seal the win.
The Lady Spartans (2-2 overall, 0-0 ICC South) got 16 points from senior Mellott, followed by junior Jeniah Lowery with 11 points.
Coach Jeff Gelvin mentioned, “The Lady Panthers were a tough match tonight and good competition for our squad. I am proud of the fight and spirit these ladies showed in sticking with it to the end and getting the win.”
