HAGERSTOWN, Md. – The Cumberland Valley Christian Blazers erased a one-point deficit at the end of three quarters and went on to defeat Highland View 41-31 Tuesday in a non-league boys basketball game.
Highland View led 19-17 at the half and 26-25 entering the final quarter, but the Blazers put together a 16-5 advantage in the fourth period to earn their first victory of the season.
“Going into this season we knew we had a young team in regard to basketball experience,” Blazers coach Austin Sanders said. “This is the first time some of these guys have had meaningful minutes at the varsity level. As a coach, that requires some patience and understanding, especially at the beginning of the season. I was really happy with our defense. We have put a priority on our defense creating our offense, and we were finally able to do that in the second half of this game. I think we could still improve on our offensive execution, and we will continue to work on that in practice.”
The Blazers (1-4) had two players combine for the bulk of their scoring – Zach Mace with 18 points and Nathan Minnier with 13. Minnier executed a double-double with a team-leading 10 rebounds. He also had three assists, and Mace had six rebounds and three assists.
Also prominent on the stat sheet were Gage Brookens with six points and four steals, Turner Egolf with three points and four steals, Landon Kellogg with one point and four steals, and Archer Munson with five rebounds.
