GETTYSBURG- The Shippensburg Greyhounds moved to 7-0 (6-0 MPC Keystone) with a 35-7 win over the Gettysburg Warriors. Shippensburg outrushed the home squad 385-85 and total yards 389-239. The Hounds averaged 7.00 yards per play in the contest, and the defense forced a fumble and interception.
The Hounds’ rushing attack was led by Mark Carothers Jr., who had 152 yards on 20 carries. Ja’nye Statum added 3 touchdowns and 133 yards on 25 attempts, and for good measure, Jaden Hines, with just six touches, ran for 80 yards.
The Hounds opened the scoring with the first drive, an 8-play 82-yard drive. Mark Carothers Jr. capped the drive with a seven-yard run and jump-started the drive with a 31-yard scamper.
The Hounds put up two scores in the second quarter. The drives were eight for 71 and 8 for 51. Noah Garvin’s fumble recovery set up Statums’s six-yard run. Statum capped off the second drive with a two-yard plunge, and Shippensburg led 21-0.
Gettysburg’s only score came right before the half. Brady Heiser hooked up with Shayde Shultz for 45 yards. Heiser capped the drive with a three-yard keeper.
Shippensburg’s run chewed up plenty of clock in the second half. The Hounds had the ball twice but scored twice. The third-quarter drive was 12 plays, 76 yards, and took 7:59 off the clock.
Statum’s five-yard run capped that drive.
Hines’s interception in the endzone stopped the Warriors’ drive, and the Hounds went 80 yards in 12 plays, eating up another 7:39. Carothers Jr.’s 35-yard sprint with 2:05 left ended the scoring.
The Shippensburg offense only had one play go for negative yards (a one-yard loss at that), and in total, 11 of their 56 plays were two yards or less. On the other hand, Gettysburg had 24 of its 46 plays go for two yards or less.
Red Land will be next for the Greyhounds, an upset winner over Hershey. The game will be Shippensburg’s Homecoming game.
