Chambersburg roundup: Tennis earns win; volleyball upends CV

Zoe Dereef

GIRLS TENNIS
Chambersburg 5, Gettysburg 0: The Trojans snapped a 4-match losing streak with authority on Thursday afternoon in a non-league match on the road at Gettysburg.

“I am happy that the girls could get a win after our most recent stretch,” Chambersburg coach Niko Mucci said. “We’re looking to finish the season strong.”

The Trojans only lost 3 games in the 3 singles matches, and only one game in the 2 doubles matches.

In singles play, Charlie Kalathas won 6-0, 6-0 at No. 1, Leah Wadel picked up a 6-0, 6-1 victory at No. 2 and Zoe Dereef was a 6-1, 5=6-1 winner at No. 3.

The domination continued in doubles for Chambersburg (2-7). The No. 1 team of Gwen Sefcheck and Shelby Newman were 6-0, 6-1 winners, while No. 2 Gretta Hill and Julianna Small earned a 6-0, 6-0 win.

GIRLS VOLLEYBALL
Chambersburg 3, Cumberland Valley 1: The Trojans turned around an earlier defeat to the Eagles, by taking CV down 3-1 Thursday evening at the CASHS Field House in a Mid Penn Commonwealth clash.

Alayna Jones

CV (3-5) had won 3-2 earlier this season, but this time it was the Trojans (9-3, 4-3 MPC) who prevailed, taking games of 25-19, 22-25, 25-18 and 25-18.

Chambersburg coach Ty Frelin said, “We played determined tonight and we stayed positive through the whole match.

“We controlled the net, served tough and passed really well out of serve receive. We made good decisions offensively and stayed aggressive.”

Alayna Jones led in kills with 12, along with Marah Lehman (12), and also led in service points (14). Riley Evans smacked down 8 blocks, while Nizaya Hawkins was strong at the net with 8 kills and 3 blocks.

Other leaders included Karley Skultety (12 points, 28 digs); Lehman (30 digs, 11 points); Ava Zeigler posted 33 assists and had 16 digs.

Brooke Bidniuk

GIRLS SOCCER
Cumberland Valley 3, Chambersburg 0: The Eagles burned the Trojan defense on a pair of quick counters for goals in the first half and used that cushion to hand Chambersburg a Mid Penn Commonwealth defeat Thursday evening at Trojan Stadium.

Chambersburg coach Paul Unruh said, “We got down early, but our response was positive and we played our way back into the game, gaining some momentum from which we created some high-percentage chances.

“We played the second half with the most physicality I’ve seen from the girls this season, and with the exception of the penalty kick we gave away, we did very little wrong.  Brooke Bidniuk has put in two super solid defensive shifts this week.”

The Trojans are 3-5-2 (2-4-1 MPC); the Eagles are 8-3.

BOYS SOCCER
Cumberland Valley 4, Chambersburg 0: The Trojans got off a rough start against the Eagles and could not recover, taking a Mid Penn Commonwealth defeat Thursday night at New Kingstown.

“The first half we came out flat against a very good CV team and they made us pay,” Chambersburg coach Corey Grove said. “Second half was much better, but we just couldn’t get anything going. We are looking forward to righting the ship and finding some wins next week.”

The Eagles (8-1) had 15 shots to 5 for the Trojans (3-7-1, 1-4-1 MPC), and led in corners, 7-2. Chambersburg goalkeepers Tyson Shanholtz and Gio Barberio split 8 saves.
