GIRLS VOLLEYBALL
Greencastle-Antrim 3, Big Spring 2: In a non-league match Tuesday night in Greencastle, the Bulldogs pushed the Blue Devils to the limit before G-A earned a 17-15 win in game 5 to take a big victory.
Greencastle (8-1) collected wins in the first two games, 25-16 and 25-21. But Big Spring rallied to take the next two, 27-25 and 25-22.
G-A had twice as many aces (18) as service errors. Alaina Garling had 3 points and 7 aces, Abby Eagler had 8 points and 4 aces, Morgan Kline led in points with 15 and Kylie Kerns added 9.
At the net, Eagler rapped out 20 kills, Wren Roberts had 11 and Kerns had 8. Kerns (27) and Garling (23) led in assists. The leaders in digs were Eagler (26), Garling (15), Kline (14), Roberts (12) and Kerns (12)
FIELD HOCKEY
Gettysburg 4, Greencastle-Antrim 0: The Warriors handed the Blue Devils a Mid Penn Colonial defeat on Tuesday afternoon at Kaley Field.
“It was a rough game all-around for us,” G-A coach Keara Allshouse said. “But tomorrow is a new day and there is something you can learn from every game, no matter the outcome. Many players worked hard today, including Jaylynn Schmuck and Abigail Kielek.”
Greencastle (2-4, 1-3 MPC) got 7 saves from goalie Rebecca Jones.
BOYS CROSS COUNTRY
Greencastle-Antrim 25, James Buchanan 30: Noah Parks and Joel Amstutz finished 1-2 to help the Blue Devils get past the Rockets in a close Mid Penn Colonial meet on G-A’s home course Tuesday afternoon.
Parks won in 17:02 and Amstutz was 3 seconds behind for the Blue Devils (4-1, 4-1 MPC).
Greencastle’s next 3 finishers — Logan Bohrer (4th), Billy Bender (8th) and Abric Coy (10th) finished just high enough to hold off the Rockets.
JB’s top five included Tristan (3rd in 17:23), Nate Towns (5th), Max Embree (6th), Isaac Diehl (7th), and Colton Yeager (9th).
GIRLS CROSS COUNTRY
James Buchanan 16, Greencastle-Antrim 47: The Rockets pushed across the first four runners, and five of the first six to down the Blue Devils in a Mid Penn Colonial meet Tuesday afternoon in Greencastle.
JB’s top pack included Katelyn Clever (21.09), Amber Myers (24.00), Lily Garbinski (24:44) and Dora Atherton (24:45), while Sarah Oakman was sixth in 24:57.
For Greencastle (1-4, 1-4 MPC), the top runner was fifth-place Sophia Denlinger in 24:53.
Also for G-A, Monica Schemel was seventh and Shalini Majaraj was 10th.
GOLF
Blue Devils take 2nd place: Greencastle-Antrim put 3 players in the top 9 and captured second place in the final Mid Penn Colonial match of the season, held at Great Cove G.C.
Ben Horst shot 78 to take third place, and Camden Eby and Bryce Davidson each shot 83 to tie for ninth. The Blue Devils scored a team total of 334, 11 behind winner Shippensburg.
“We had a very solid team effort today to take second,” G-A coach Jeremy Eby said. “Hopefully it’ll be a great springboard into the postseason, which begins next week.”
The Greyhounds’ top players were Ben Horgos (2nd, 76), Kaydee Beckenbaugh (6th, 80) and Brayden Mitchell (tie for 7th, 82).
Waynesboro’s Tyler Fortney shot an even-par 72 to win the medalist honors, while James Buchanan’s Taylor Blair shot 82 to tie for seventh.
In the team standings, Northern took first place with a 37-5 record, followed by Ship (34-8), Gettysburg (23-19), Greencastle and Waynesboro (22-20), James Buchanan (9-33) and Big Spring (0-42).
